Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Our beloved pier was all but totally destroyed by fire last night. Sadly this is probably the last nail in the coffin for restoration plans

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

It was only yesterday that The Pier Trust placed an advert for archtects for its restoration. Compulsory purchase that is going through at present as its owners in Panama have refused to negotiate.. The pier has been closed for four years for safety reasons.

Two people arrested this morning in connection with the fire.

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Our local BBC radio station was discussing people's memories of Hastings pier this morning. The presenter read out an email saying
"Gary Glitter had performed on the pier in the 1970s. He fell off the pier into the sea. He was found by lifeguards bobbing up and down on a buoy"

He quickly realised what he had said and pointed out the spelling B-U-O-Y, adding that he didn't think the story was true.

Fire brigade are still on hand damping down the fire more than 36 hours later.

If it is arson, which I believe that it is from what I have heard it makes me so mad.
Last weekend the "Dinosaur" model in Portsmouth which was amazing was burnt down aswell.
I don't understand the mentality...

Take heart - they said much the same about Saaarfen Pier; it's had numerous fires, plus a boat crashing right through it, and it's still live and kicking, so there's still hope.

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

I was very sad to hear about this - many great childhood (& teenage;-)) memories centred around Hastings pier :-(
I have been happy to see the regeneration of Hastings in the last few years when visiting my former 'hometown' - what a setback BUT this has put Hastings back in the media.

The Hastings Pier Trust advised that they have received offers of support from several countries, including Switzerland. If that was any of you, many thanks

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Latest news is that things are not as bad as first thought. A preliminary survey indicates that the main supporting structure doesn't appear to have suffered particularly. Most of the buildings on the pier would have needed to be demolished to repair the structure anyway. In some ways the fire will make the renovation easier.

Hastings Council will remove all the dangerous and loose structures very soon. They are using emergency powers as the owners cannot be, or don't want to be, traced.

An emergency appeal has been started to raise around £250,000 to protect the pier from further damage during the winter. The main grants cannot be applied for until the pier is officially owned by The Pier Trust.

Should anyone wish to donate to the Emergency appeal, the bank details are HSBC Sort Code 40-23-18 Account 12249871.

Why not to be restored ? In Luzern, the Kapellbrücke was fully restored, in Zürich the Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten was fully restored, just to name two out of many.

Technically, there doesn't seem to be a problem with restoration.

The big problem is that the owners are an Investment Company based in Panama. They abandoned the pier over four years ago and have ignored all contact from the authorities. The local Council have limited powers but were in the process of going through compulsory purchase of the pier. It would then have been immediately transferred to a Pier Trust who could apply for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This should still go ahead but has been delayed due to the fire. The local Council can only undertake a limited amount of safety work as the owners have failed to do so.

It is a very frustrating situation that should not have been allowed to go on this long. The saga goes back far longer than this and many people think that more could, and should, have been done years ago.

Given the fact the restauration plans where on the way and conflicting with the owner, it will be hard to convince people that it was an accident. Whether it was in the interest of the owner or of the restauration-defenders, I let you the judge of that. And sorry for being impolite, but that shows why privatisation is not always a good idea. Investment funds have nothing to look for in cultural goods. I accept to be called a communist for this sentence, but I will never ever believe that private companies are the best protector or common cultural goods.

Most local people would agree with you that allowing the pier into private ownership was a mistake.

Two youths were arrested in relation to the fire and have been released on bail. Whether they started the fire deliberately, or by accident has still to be determined. The pier was not insured so nobody stands to gain financially from the fire.

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Information just released by Hastings Pier Trust:

"I am delighted to be able to inform you that the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded Hastings Pier a grant of £11.4 million towards the total project cost of £13.9 million to rescue and restore the Pier.

This is a great result for the Pier and the town of Hastings and it means we are within touching distance of the fundraising goal needed to start the restoration of the Pier.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for your support and encouragement, without which we would certainly not have reached this significant milestone. The fierce commitment of the Pier’s supporters has been a unique feature of the battle to save the Pier, and I hope very much that you will continue to support the cause.

Clearly we still have much work to do and over the coming weeks we will tell you about our plans going forward and how we intend to achieve our final goal of reopening the Pier by the end of 2014.

For now let’s celebrate this truly momentous decision that has given hope and life to the Pier and our project to rescue it. Thank you so much for your support. It really has made all the difference."

Maybe they (the trust) started the fire on purpose for an insurance claim to fund the restoration work

I am very sad to hear that I spent many happy nights there in '94 and '95 when I was in language school for a few weeks in summer. I met my first teenage love there, I remember standing on the pier hugged tightly to my crush watching the sea...

The Pier was privately owned by a Panamanian investment company and not insured. The compulsory purchase order to pass it to the Trust can now be completed.

The only 'benefits' of the fire were increased publicity, easier access to the structure and more choice on the redesign.

It should be open to the public again in September 2014
