LGBTQI muslims conference in Paris

It's rare enough to be not mentioned here. It's clearly a minority but their actions deserve to be made public.

"It is possible to be a good Muslim while being homosexual." The assertion is often in the words of Imam Moulana Muhsin Hendricks, the only cleric in the world with Daayiee Abdullah taking his homosexuality publicly. Saturday, they were both in Paris, under high security police, to attend the first international conference of Muslim gay associations, Calem."

- CALEM: associations of LGBTQI muslims in europe
- 2 gay imams attending the conference
- The inner Circle: sout-african gay muslim association

While I can understand the "circle" choice from islamic point of view, I find the word not suitable for a gay association....unless they want to display a great sense of humour.

Re: LGBTQI muslims conference in Paris

I'm glad to see this sort of conference taking place. Hopefully this dialogue will get more publicity than it has until now, as it is exactly these reformist attitudes that make it clear to the "eastern" and "western" worlds that islamic culture and western culture are not incompatible. There are individuals in both of our cultures who are trying to make life better for themselves and their neighbors by reducing discrimination and gaining acceptance. (Not "tolerance," that's something else.)

As the media is so instrumental in determining what becomes mainstream or accepted, I really hope this movement gets some more airplay - though I'm not holding my breath. If there was an act of violence at the conference it would certainly make the news...

(By the way, you can say I'm part of the no-sense-of-humor brigade, but your crude joke about the Inner Circle name really doesn't bring anything to the table except a fascination and/or discomfort with teh buttsecks. By distilling millions of people's lives down to a joke like that, you're just participating in the same dialogue that this conference is engaged to dispel.)

I can understand your reaction, but since it's really about communication and fighting stereotypes, I do believe that they have the responsibility to select adequate names that do not lead to misinterpretations. This is obvious when selecting a brand name, a product name etc... it also applies to associations. Maybe they did it on purpose to get the attention who knows.
If I take the example of french LGBTQ magazine "Gay Pied" it's a nice pun and gives already an appreciated perception of offhand manners.

...erm... yes, maybe they "did it on purpose to get the attention."

or

maybe your reaction has more to do with this attitude than with rational discourse:

Well, I guess they're being given the choice between being punished for homosexuality or apostasy. Good deal!

First ? Hardly (http://www.haaretz.com/news/first-is...haifa-1.216913)

High Security - Who might attack it ? A gay conference was canceled in Indonesia for security reasons.

Good luck to them - The day an openly gay (LGBTQI++) PM is elected in a Muslim country, would be a very good day.
