In a former life, I did liver cell research and some of the entertainments we did was guess the weight of the sample donor by the amount of lipocytes (fat) in the sample chunk after extracting the hepatocytes and assessing what stage of alcohol addiction they had since both are easy to spot. Gotta liven up research somehow Once we even got a green, hard sample from a truly hard-core drinker. After a certain stage of alcohol abuse over time, no, the liver can no longer function.
But for your average every(other)day drinker, are their livers irreperably damaged by alcohol? Or do they recover? Do all heavy drinkers develop chirrosis?

It's a risk of alcohol consumption, not it's absolute and definite end.

Re: [BBC News] Alcohol more harmful than Heroin! Should it be made illegal?

Quote:
Alcohol is more harmful than heroin or crack when the overall dangers to the individual and society are considered, according to a study in the Lancet.
Surely the overall danger to society depends on how widespread/available the drug is in that particular society. If one (alcohol) is more widespread/available than the other (heroin), their danger to society can't be compared on the same footing. It's like comparing the dangers of deer and kangaroos on British roads and saying deer are more dangerous.
