Hi-de-Hi to Low-de-Low (Pontins in Administration)

Holiday camp company Pontins has today gone into administration. I am surprised that they have lasted this long to be honest. The camp not far from me at Camber in Sussex has looked as if it has been on its last legs for years. Whether they can survive this is debatable. I doubt it.

Is a shame, but I agree. I stayed at a camp in Somerset. Worst place I have ever been, the chalet was like staying in a garden shed and about as clean as one. Was a Sun token holiday thought so didn't complain too loudly .

They never seemed to have updated themselves like Butlins have. Expensive based on what you actually get for your money. Much preferred my caravan holidays although Haven took a bit of a bashing on Watchdog this week as well.

I worked in one of their hotels in Sardinia for 6 months in the 1980s, and was surprised they were still open then. Awful place.

Re: Hi-de-Hi to Low-de-Low (Pontins in Administration)

As a kid I remember going to one in the 70's - great fun from a kids point of view, but I too am surprised that they were still going. I suppose with the introduction of cheap package holidays the whole holiday camp idea became rather obsolete.

While I'm sad to see them go, I can't help feeling that they are a relic from the 50's 60's and 70's.

The one near us was affectionately known to the locals (although rather distastefully) as the concentration camp. It had barbed wire around the perimeter but it was angled towards the interior rather than the exterior as if to keep the guests in rather than intruders out.

The one at Camber doesn't have the barbed wire fence but the main building looks more like a retail warehouse unit.

I think most of the camps make as much money off-season with their weekend music events as they do from holidaymakers

Pontins has been rescued by Britannia Hotels. They have said they will keep all of the sites open.

Pontin's camps remind of council housing estates. Cheaply built flats with a few desolate shops and the social club in the middle.

That sounds about right. Camber site also has a warehouse stuck in front of it

Spent a holiday there with my parents when I was 5; luckily for me, I can't remember it all.

I do remember the regimented style of eating meals - in shifts - and the horrible cold carrots still have a place in my memory,,,,,,,,,

Fortunately, I escaped childhood visits to Pontins (or Butlins).
I know how food memories can remain though. Are horrible carrots reserved for children?

I like the new avatar. Very appropriate for this thread and Switzerland
