From England to Zurich

Hello everyone!

I moved from Birmingham (i'm originally from kent) to Zurich last November and i'm liking it here so far. The only issue is I don't know anyone here and am finding it quite difficult to meet people. I live with my Swiss boyfriend but he isn't from Zurich and doesn't have any friends here either.

I'd like to come along to some social events, have a few drinks and meet some fellow english speakers to have a laugh with.

Hope to meet some of you soon!

Re: From England to Zurich

Hi Vicky,
Take a look at the calendar. There are weekly social events
posted. There is a group that does drinks every Wednesday, I
believe.

Additionally, there are other events such as skiing in the winter
and hiking in the summer.

I would suggest lurking on the forum a bit and then finding someone
that has similar interests. There is a group that does "Stitch and bitch".
apparently, it is about needlepoint.

Good luck! You can also hang out at the Irish/English pubs in town.
There are plenty of expats there.

Re: From England to Zurich

Hi Vicky,

I'm in the same boat, i just recently moved to Zurich from Vancouver, Canada, and don't know anyone in town.

I'd definitely be up for joining a group to go out for few beverages and meet some new people. Anyone else out there interested?

Re: From England to Zurich

Count me in, I got here a few weeks ago but haven't been in town a weekend as yet so no chance to meet English speakers as yet. I don't speak any German either which doesn't help!

Im Welsh, but moved from New York with work (Banking) and I know only one other person in Zurich so I have just taken a look at the social calendar and reckon I'll show up at Toto on Saturday and if I can make it will do the love quiz in Weidikon the following Friday.

Drop me a line via PM if you'd like to meet up or else join on the events and we'll meet up there

Cheers

Re: From England to Zurich

There is a book swap meet-up at Starbucks on Stauffacher organised via the expats in Zurich yahoo group, I haven't been yet but hope to go this coming Monday (Jan 10) to meet people and basically get out of the house as I haven't seen much daylight since having a baby last month. I only moved to zurich 3 months ago from the UK so don't know many people but doing my best to get out and about and be sociable when I can!

Re: From England to Zurich

Hi Vicky

Me and the missus are in our mid-twenties, and just arrived in Zurich this week from London. We don't know anyone and don't speak any German (yet). We're going to Toto tomorrow, and we'd be up for meeting for a drink some other time as well. Drop me a PM if you're organising anything.

Hopefully see you around soon...

Re: From England to Zurich

Hi Vicky, welcome to the EF & Switzerland!!

Since you've landed in Zürich, you'll find there are heaps of Social Events on - even some that will help you with shopping for those specific spices and ingredients you just won't find in the 'normal' supermarkets here ...

Get out, explore, and see things. At least your boyfriend has the advantage of speaking one of the local dialects ... unless he's from outside the German-speaking part of Switzerland?

The Wednesday night drinks are good (I found), but they're generally not on during winter ... although there are sometimes Wednesday afternoon drinks, in all seasons.

Re: From England to Zurich

Hi vicky,
nice to meet you!

we're in a similar situation - my boyfriend lives in Zurich (and I live with him half the year or so) as I'm on a distance learning degree so having the same problem meeting people.. apart from through the forum!

would be nice to get to know some english speakers in the zurich area .. especially whilst working on our German.

If anything gets organised/ you want to organise something let me know
hopefully we'll meet some of the lovely forum members soon!

(I'm 20 by the way)

Here's a map. Don't know where you're coming from, but you can get tram 4 from HB towards Tiefenbrunnen - the nearest stop is Höschgasse.

Re: From England to Zurich

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the lovely replies. Wasn't able to make it to the drinks at Toto last saturday, but hope that everyone had fun!

I was hoping to organise some lighthearted drinks in Zurich during January to meet up with some fellow forum members. I've read the rules for creating a social event and i'm not sure I qualify yet...don't want to step on any toes or anything but would anyone fancy meeting up for a few drinks on Wednesday 19th Jan? I'm completely new to all of this so I apologise now if this isn't the way to do things here! Just want to get a group together to get to know a few people and have a laugh

Re: From England to Zurich

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Here's some detail from the events Sticky guide:

"Who can post events

In order to post an event, you have to have a little forum history. Most people qualify pretty quickly. The reason for this is that we want to encourage people to be an active part of the community and not to use it just for free advertising. The qualifications are as follows:
  • At least 5 forum posts (not off topic)
  • Member for at least one week
  • Neutral or positive reputation"
It would be lovely if you wanted to arrange something. I'm sure you'd get a lot of interested people

So, another post to make five, then you're set! As long as you wait until tomorrow to post the event, so you've been here a week ...

Re: From England to Zurich

Is this the January "welcome Newbies" thread? If so, welcome to y'all

There's an informal drinks meet up every Thursday evening at the market where I work, anything from 5 - 50 people of all ages and nationalities turn up from 7 until late, more info on this thread. Hope to see some new faces this Thursday! (should be a busy one as I hear the Hash House Harriers will be running, sorry, drinking, here)

Re: From England to Zurich

Thanks Uncle Max & Araqyl, will get an event sorted out soon then!

Grumpy, the viadukt looks great, may even pop down there later on today to have a nose.

Drinks on Thursday sounds good too, will try and make it!
