From London to Zurich

Hi there,

I'm from Milan but have been living and working for the past 3 years and a half in London, where 2 years ago I met my boyfriend. Last year he was offered a job in Zurich so moved to Zurich, temporarily at the beginning but turns out we love it here (and it's close to my home town, which is a great plus!). For a year now we've been back and forth and managed to be together every weekend but the situation is becoming slightly unsustainable, so I've decided to look at options for me to move to Zurich. And as I had expected it's not as easy as it was to move to London!

If I keep my job in London (which I can turn into a consultancy job) am I allowed to live in Zurich, can I apply for Swiss residency but still work in London and go to London twice a month? And would I have to pay taxes?

If I decide to leave my job and take a sabbatical to spend in Zurich, learning German and looking for a job, given my boyfriend lives here and has a residency permit, can I live in Zurich for a year without working?

Thanks for any thoughts you can share!!

Manuela

Hi Manuela,

i suppose if you live here you pay taxes here too

now if you can afford to stay here without working its something you have to work out with your other half...

i know its a difficult to relocate and you know it too from previous experience
i believe it has to do very much with your partner...

good luck in everything you do

Re: From London to Zurich

Hi epag,

thanks for your reply. I've saved up for a while for a gap year, which I would spend studying German, travelling, taking perhaps an additional uni degree. My partner is here regardless and it would save us the hassle (and cost) of flying every week...

What I don't know is if I'm allowed to live here while I'm not working or if I decide to take up a consultancy role with a UK contract, travelling to London twice a month, a I still allowed to live here with a UK work contract? I'd be happy to pay taxes whereever I live of course. So many questions I'll keep digging, thanks for wishing me good luck, I need some

Have a great start of the new year!

M.

Re: From London to Zurich

i think M that there is no problem for you to live here and declare the income you earn in another country,i am pretty sure actually thats what you do
you get a B permit rather quickly and everything is done
happy new year to you too! hope everything works out as you wish
