Introduction

Hello Everyone,
I have been visiting this forum for a few months now and I thought I had better intruce myself.
The reason for my interest is that, fingers crossed I may be moving accross to the Basel area shortly with my wife. I have got an interview on Monday but will be flying in on Sunday, with a company on the out skirts of Basel. Can anyone suggest which area I should be looking for accomodation. Location is important to me and dont mind traveling up to hour to get back and forth. I'm not sure if I should be looking in Germany, France or CH. I'm looking for somewhere scenic. Maybe towards Bern or maybe the Black Forest.

Thanks all

Andy

Re: Introduction

there are some really nice rural areas in Basel Land which is outside of the city and quite beautiful. The best place to search is http://www.homegate.ch

Re: Introduction

tax-wise you'd probably benefit from not living in Germany nor France - if you're considering coming across the border, do note that the Basel ones often are annoyingly busy and there are roadworks making the main French one an absolutely horror to use.

Re: Introduction

Thanks for your responses. So basically you pay less tax in switzerland than you would do in France or Germany. And the roads are a nightmare on the French side. Is that correct. My work will be at the airport. I appriciate any advise you can supply.

Thanks

Andy

Re: Introduction

Hi Andy!
Hope all goes well with the interviews etc... We moved from Northern Ireland a year ago now, originally came for my husband's job, and we chose to settled in France while both of us work in Basel, as our move was not only for new careers/jobs but also for a better lifestyle.

We commute to work via public transport which is REALLY easy and avoids all the traffic problems. My recommendation is - if you can do it - is to come over for a weekend (a long one if you can swing it) and look at it from a 'we're going to live here' perspective. See where you want to live with how you want to live in mind....We did it after the job offer came through, and it really made up our minds.

So far, we've loved it - hope you do too.

Re: Introduction

Hi Everyone. Just want to introduce myself as suggested. I am South African, currently living with my wife (also from RSA) in France. I have a British registered business that I want to relocate to the Appenzell region shortly.

France is having a crack-down on foreign businesses that make their profits outside the country and of course they completely ignore European rules and make their own up as they go along. Swiss rules appear to be straightforward and transparent and of course taxes are lower. I would welcome hearing from anybody that has relocated a SME limited company from the EU to Switzerland, particularly from Britain.

Re: Introduction

Hi,

We work in Basel and live in France. My husband cycles to work and we live close to public transport, but you could move further out and buy/rent lovely properties in small villages within 40mins drive from Basel. In Germany the taxes are much higher and I remember someone said/wrote recently that to get the best out of this area financially you should live in the Alsace, shop in Germany and work in Switzerland. We go touring in all 3 countries so where you live has little impact on where you choose to visit. We chose France simply because we can afford to live in a house with a small garden and could only get an apartment for the same price in Basel. If you're planning on having children in the near future child care is much cheaper in France, and it could turn out to be better from a tax point of view too. You can also choose the border you go over, and the time you go over it, so don't let that put you off.

HTH

Janey

Yup, Number 11 tram from St Louis Grenze. That's my public transport route... drops me off right outside of work right at the front door - never planned it like that, just worked out that way!

Re: Introduction

Hi Janey

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the greedy French taxman wants a slice of the business income that is not generated in France - even though my company is not French and has no French income either. It is no good referring to European law because they always ignore it when it suits them. I will have to move to Switzerland where the law is clear and transparent.
