Dear All,

We are a family of 3 (self, husband and 13 year old daughter) and we are moving to Zurich this summer. I work for a Swiss organisation and have traveled often to this beautiful country, mostly to Bern. Moving there however is a different kettle of fish. From all the other posts here realise that the first step is to figure out the school options and then look for a house. I have read several of the posts on Integration school vs International ones. Some specific questions still remain and would appreciate your help:
1. Any experiences with integration of an only English speaking 13 yr old in Swiss school system? Is it possible or already too late?
2. Any Indians (Asian) with experience on this matter?
3. I have been told that of late rentals in Zurich have become very high and if I have an option should look at smaller cities to live in. I do have an option to live in Bern. Is the difference in apartment rentals significant between the two cities or does that get equalised when you take the tax differential into account?
4. Saw the looong thread on racial issues. I have not experienced any of that in about 10 trips to the country. But my child is dark skinned. Should we be worried, should I look for an Asian oriented neighbourhood?

We would really like to integrate and enjoy living in Switzerland as much as we have enjoyed our short visits.

Can't really comment on any of the school issues, since our child is too young. Have lived in Europe for 7 years now, and one thing I have learnt about discrimination (racial or otherwise) is that it exists everywhere. I think the people in India are even sometimes more racist than most Europeans. Foremost is the person's attitude in handling this, and kids will learn first from parents.

I do find that the average Swiss can be very nice and friendly to foreigners, and I have had no issues to date. Knowing the language goes very far in living an integrated life and understanding the culture.
