From America, going to Basel in a week for five months

Hello everyone,

I'm from Atlanta Georgia, just graduated college and will be doing an internship in Basel for five months until mid July. I think I'll be living on or near the University of Basel campus..not exactly sure. I really need to work on my German, Ive only been studying it for a few months. Anyway, don't know anyone in Switzerland, so let me know if you have a group of friends or want to meet up for good times!

Re: From America, going to Basel in a week for five months

Thanks everyone! I am going to be working in a research type internship for five months while in Basel.

I know there are probably threads on this, but how important/hard will it be for me not knowing much German? I've read about the swiss-dialect and as of now, I feel like I can say and read basic German but know I will have trouble understanding native speakers.

I'll start looking into the calendar and events, hope to meet some of yall soon

First welcome to Basel. When I arrived I had a modecum of school german that went out the window on the first day... but that said, the written language is high german and you are coming to a city bordered by france and germany, so we are use to strange language and staying flexible. So stay friendly ( but not too american in your face friendly please) and you will be fine. Most people around here speak at least one or two foreign languages which usually includes english ( especially the younger Baslers) and love to practice. This definitely also goes for the quite multi culti campus here.
So stay open and flexible and you will do just fine.
One important tip though - you want something you ask. you don't understand something, you ask. Don't wait for someone to volunteer anything - it will never happen - unless you are honest and ask.

Re: From America, going to Basel in a week for five months

Hi and welcome to Switzerland.

Don't worry about the German, you won't be able to understand the swiss dialect at all. not to be alarmed, you'll probably get the hang of it with time. and you can probably get by with english pretty well. what you do need to do is pack a lot of warm clothes, it can be very very cold in winter and spring.
hope you have a good time during your stay
