Any Hungarians out there?

Hello everyone,

I'm just about to move to Basel, have secured a place in Allscwhil (after an awful lot of paper-work!) and am about to start work in a few weeks.

My girlfriend is Hungarian and I was wondering if there are any fellow Magyars around? She'll not be working for a wee while, so I thought I'd ask on her behalf.

Me, I'm boring Scots / English, not very exotic I know. Anyway, I'll be trawling the forum for cricket / rugby related goodness in the near future, hope to meet some of you soon!

In fact, I was in Paddys this last weekend watching the rugby - good pub, wonder if there are any others of this ilk around? I know the English pub, but it was far too realistic (flat beer) for my tastes last time I visited. ;-)

I think there are a lot of hungarians here. Great to hear that you're coming

What's your plan about moving? When are you going to come?

Hello mate,

We're moving here on the 21st of this month, going to have a normalised kind of life after a few weeks arsing about to Ikea... exciting times.

Good to hear from all of you though, nice to know there are compatriots out there (of both flavours, British and Hungarian), really looking forward to it!

thanks,
Iain

Re: Any Hungarians out there?

Hello and welcome to Basel :-)

I'm in a very similar situation - I'm English and moved here for work and a better quality of life.

My wife is Hungarian and she's been looking around at the various Hungarian communities. There are many Magyar folk that's for sure - try checking out http://www.cilike.ch.

Oh, one more thing, there's also a pub called Mr Pickwick's. It's different to Paddy's and a bit more down to earth. Suppose it depends on your preference. We go down there from time to time.

Re: Any Hungarians out there?

hi Jason,

Thanks, and thanks also for the links. I don't know if you're like me, but Hungarian's a tricky one to master, so it's good to know that our lass will be able to potentially meet up with some of her compatriots (and speak gibberish to each other).

Cheers!
Iain

Re: Any Hungarians out there?

I don't do too bad with Hungarian. I know a fair amount - it's not easy to learn though, I'll agree with you there.

Also, something you should know - every Wednesday there's a market in Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and there's a Hungarian stall there selling traditional meats, salami, paprika products and honey etc. Always worth stopping by if you're in the area.

Re: Any Hungarians out there?

Not Hungarian but just got back from a St. Valentine's weekend in Budapest. Second time there and far from the last. My favorite city in Europe thus far. I'd like to say I speak Magyar, but I have trouble pronouncing the subway stops.

I don't know a lot about Zurich, will probably be there for the street parade this year. If the girlfriend has any advice for our next trip to Buda we could use it. The Sparty (spa-party) was pretty bad, 28€ to freeze to bad trance music. They drained the thermal bath after an hour and forced us in to the cold pool, with the doors open to let the smoke out we gave up fast.

I hear West Balkins would be our type of place, but with the 3 deaths they had during the stampede they were closed. News said they were 3 times over capacity.

Re: Any Hungarians out there?

Hi Felixlechat,

My own experience of Budapest is limited, I would though highly recommend Visegrad. Our lass comes from there and it's beautiful, I don't say that lightly either; it's on the banks of the Danube and has a very old scary castle on the hills above it. Brilliant.

It's about an hours drive max from the capital, not too bad, but if you want a taste of proper Hungary (IMHO) that's a place to go.

I will ask her about Budapest though, and get back to you. Wonderful country. I prefer the areas outside the capital, but I understand that on a short break that's not always possible.

Speak for yourself laddie !

Kidding, welcome to EF.

I have a couple of Hungarians at work and one has a GF here. I will ask him if he is on here.

Try Mr Pickwicks, that bills itself as an English/Scottish pub but there is looooooooads of ex-pats in Basel. Enjoy and see you around perhaps.

Hi Iain,

I am Hungarian and me wife is English. We moved to Zurich last year. Unfortunately I know only one Hungarian in Basel, but I met few more here in Zurich. I'm sure she will meet with many of them there as well.
If you have any question don't hesitate.

I agree - Vsergrad is a great little place. I have camped beside the river just above the town, a few times in mid summer. Estergom, a little upstream , is another place that I like.... or anywhere on the danube Also Szegad in the south. Great country :-) I am about to send you a PM re Basel Hungarian contacts.
