From Finland to Basel

Hello all,

I arrived from Finland to Basel at 1st of February and will be working here for three years. I am a 30 male and my hobbies include mostly the regular stuff such as sports, reading, going to pubs, etc.

I really like English comedy series and I am just now watching "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (Series 1)". The series seems to capture my situation rather well, even though I am not working at a construction site

Hi Vissy,

and welcome to the Forum. I remember that funny series from the 80s. A few others you might want to try is "only fools and horses" and "red dwarf".

I wish you all the very best in Basel.
Cheers
Harry

Re: From Finland to Basel

Thanks for the links. I didn't realise there were so many of you Finns here. (My neighbour being one of them).

Looking forward to my summer holiday in Finnland this year too, Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, here I come.

Cheers,
Harry

Re: From Finland to Basel

Welcome to Switzerland!

Following with previous posts: I'm sure that soon you will meet a lot of Finns! At least in Zurich I came across quite a few. It always made me smile to hear people speaking Finnish on the train or in the street! And you should definitely visit Helsinki bar in Zurich! They even have Karhu beer and great salmiakkikossu (tested by official Finns & myself) .)

I'm actually Spanish but I've been living in Finland for a couple of years (mainly in Kuopio). I was 6 months in Zurich last year and in May I will return to spend a few years this time too .) It's a beautiful country, I wish you enjoy your time here! But I must admit that sometimes I was homesick (not from Spain, but from Finland!).

Cheers,
Carmen

Re: From Finland to Basel

Finnish artists Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen collected the pet peeves and angst-ridden pleas of people in Helsinki and then composed this choral work around the list of complaints. Music composed by Esko Grundström.

Cool, thanks for that, I didn't know such a FB group existed! Just joined it

Everyone keeps telling me there are so many Finns in Switzerland but I haven't bumped into any yet.... Here's hoping it's not just an urban legend!

When I was with my daughter at the children-park a few months ago, I discussed with an other father who had a little daughter almost same age as mine. I told him that my little one had a Finnish mother (and that's why I was understanding the weird words that my daughter was saying), and he told me his wife was Finnish too. Voilà, it does happen. Our respective wives meet quite regularly, it does feel good to discuss in your mother language from time to time, with someone sharing the same culture.

And there was a Finnish boy at the "garderie" when we put our child there. Unfortunately, his parents moved away :-(

/Paul

Yes, even though I have spent years not speaking a word of Finnish and also managing in Finland to avoid it 90% of the time (working and studying in English, speaking English at home because of my fiancé etc) I do admit that I miss some "Nordic" things.

This is my first time living in a country without knowing the local language and THAT makes me miss just about ANY language I could understand, not just Finnish.

So, all in all, I don't seek other Finns necessarily but those who I have a common language with. For a bubbly person such as me being limited to oui, non and merci is pretty challenging.

That's easy for you to say.

There does seem to be quite a Finnish contingent. In my office we have one, and one of the Swiss guys (the only Swiss in the office) is married to another.

Hello and Terve,

Jussi, that seems to be true.
I manage to run into them here and there in Basel. (more often in a bar, for some strange reason)
And why not, Basel is a nice place to be.

Onneksi olkoon!

Sounds that it would be good time to build up company for exporting Finnish "goodies" to Switzerland
