Not quite there yet

Hi there! My name is Susie and I've finally signed up, after some time as a passive observer.

I'm currently living in New Zealand with my husband and 4 children, but we're keen to move to Switzerland as soon as I can get a job - hopefully mid to late this year (I'm already starting to stress about the prospect of having to do a job interview -eeeeek- in Swiss German -eeeek, but I guess we'll get through it).

I haven't been to Switzerland in over 20 years so I'll have to brush up on my language skills, but the children are really excited about the move and I'm looking forward to it as well - just not the job interview bit...

Re: Not quite there yet

I'm from Hamilton. Possibly one of the most uninspiring cities in the country.

We recently had a big outcry in local papers because the South African rugby team chose to spend an extra weekend at the Gold Coast (Aus) rather than spend 2 days here before a game. People claimed that Hamilton isn't boring....we have lovely public gardens (actually they are) and a zoo. But somehow I don't think that would cut it with your average rugby player.

Um, I must have driven through Hamilton but I can't remember it. But then I used to play rugby as well.

But look on the bright side, things can only get better!

Hi Susie, and welcome to the EF!!

About the interview, I wouldn't be stressing too much - unless your work will be with all Swiss people, the interviewer (at least) should be fluent in English ... and they all know High German as well, it's definitely required in Canton Zurich schools.

Re: Not quite there yet

I think what I'm most worried about is that my rusty Swiss-German tends to get mashed up with what little High German I know, and this may come across as unprofessional.

I've heard that the company I want to work for is quite international, but I at least want to look like I'm making an effort.

Welcome Susie!
Some of our best friends are from New Zealand (Dunedin and Upper Moutere) and I can't believe anyone would pass up the chance to spend time there. We definitely wouldn't!
Are you aiming to move back to Bern or somewhere new this time? Hope the interview works out well!

Michaela
