Chicago to Switzerland

Hello!

My husband has recently accepted a job with Nestle in Vevey. My husband, our 10 month-old daughter, and I will relocate from the Chicago area in late May.

I am both very excited and very nervous about the upcoming move.

I hope to find helpful information, advice, and perhaps some friends on this forum!

Hello there

Welcome to the forum,

You will love it here, I am sure. My son is the same age as your daughter. We have been here for 2 weeks but we have not moved from as far away as you will be moving from. (England) I am sure will settle fine, it is big move but all will be OK, do not worry!

Hello and welcome to the forum! I grew up in Chicago . Now I'm craving a Malnati's deep dish sausage pizza with butter crust...

Hope you'll find answers to your questions to make your transition easier. Best wishes on your move!

Welcome to the Forum Julie. Vevey is a beautiful area, and I'm sure you will settle in in no time - I imagine Nestle will certainly make this easier for you.

I had the good fortune to live in Chicago some years ago. Absolutely fabulous place!

Good luck with your new venture!

Thank you!

It's reassuring to hear this from someone with a baby who is doing exactly what we'll be doing!

It does seem that Nestle will be very helpful to us with our transition. I am very grateful for that.

I can not wait to explore Vevey.

I am happy to hear that you enjoyed Chicago. I agree that it is a fabulous place!

Get ready for a different way to eat pizza as it was originally intended. Search out some pizzarias that make it feu du bois.

Literally they place it in a clay oven, rounded top, open on the side, and inside is a pile of wood that is heating away. A thin crust, and oh so tasty with olive oil on top.

Perhaps there are some folk here who could recommend a fine place in Vevey, or around, that have great 'zas, fait par feu de bois!

Welcome to Switzerland and congrats on the awesome job at Nestle! My husband and I are also originally from Chicago (there seems to be so many Chi-towners on the EF!). We just moved about two months ago to Basel, and know it's a big move, so please PM (personal message) me if you want to chat!

Hi,
I lived in Chicago for 10 years and love it there. You won't miss the cold and snow there's plenty here too. Welcome to Switzerland.

Welcome to Switzerland. I have a few friends who work for Nestle and it appears to be a really good employer to work for and they really seem to look after new arrivals and have lots of clubs etc for employees and spouses to become involved in.

All the best.

Cheers

My excitement is growing as the weeks go by. As for the fear, I'm trying to just ignore it. But it's there...

I would love to have coffee when we arrive. And I am sure that I will have many, many questions, so thank you in advance for your help with those.

I will definitely PM you. I have a lot of questions, some of them seemingly silly questions, so I'd feel less silly asking them in a PM than in "public"!

We just returned from a week in sunny, warm Florida, so the Chicago cold and clouds are a big downer today.

However, we lived in Arizona for 3 years and I missed the cold and snow terribly.

So I guess I'm glad we'll have cold and snow? Can you tell I'm trying to talk myself into that?

Nestle has been great thus far. It is good to hear that your friends have had good experiences with them as far as helping out the new arrivals. I will be taking full advantage of those clubs!

yup, I'm completing six years in England, and before that four years in college in the Carolinas (yes, I am going to count that as 'abroad' :P)

I've been back to Chicago 2-3 times a year during my time away, but I can tell I've been gone a while because I like Italian style pizza as much as Chicago style deep dish

Welcome to the EF and soon to CH, beautiful time of the year here. Vevey is magnifique. There have been recently a few shout outs from Vevey here, you won't be alone. Good luck with the transition and don't fear it, it is usually very smooth, even with a baby. As you check in, look around for playgroups, each commune has a free playgroup place here for moms and babies to meet, usually 2-3 times a week. That's how I started integrating, pretty much, and speaking French. And if you get overwhelmed, you can organize your own EF moms&babes coffee meet ups.

I love the Carolinas! It is certainly a different world from Chicago, though.

I hope to return to Chicago several times each year as well. Our parents will not be happy if they don't get to see their granddaughter enough!

I definitely plan to look into playgroups. I am a little apprehensive about being a full time at-home mom, as I have been working part time since my daughter was 3.5 months old. I am sure that I will need to fill up my days to keep myself sane!

It's good to hear that there are so many opportunities to meet with other moms and babies.

I minored in French in college and I was fluent back then. Hopefully, it will come back to me quickly when we move!

Hey,

Best of luck. I lived in Naperville for 18 months back in the early 2000's. I have been back to Chicago a couple of times and would consider it my favourite city on earth. Moving my family to Basel at the end of april so I hope both our moves are successful and happy

If near Basel, contact me, would be pleased to entertain you and your family

Chicago is my favorite city as well, but that's because it's where my family is!

Good luck to you in your move as well.

I am sure we will make our way to Basel at some point, so we would be happy to contact you!
