Potential move to Basel from UK

Hi guys,

New to the forum here! I found you all whilst searching for information on life in Switzerland and the expat community there - it seems I've struck gold!

I've read a variety of topics on here surrounding the move to CH and life as an expat, it all seems that there have been many experiences both positive and otherwise that I wanted to seek a clearer opinion on life in Switzerland, in particular Basel.

I'm a young professional with a potential opportunity to set up a branch of our UK business in Scientific/Clinical recruitment and talent management in Basel. Not being a stranger to life as an expat having lived in Stockholm and Toronto I am always keen for an adventure and new cultural experiences.

I would love the input from you guys all living as expats (or natives) in Basel and greater Switzerland on a few things:

- Life in general in Basel (good and bad)

- Relocating with partners who will be giving up their jobs and looking for English speaking work in Basel (marketing to be precise).

- Where best to live on a moderate/good wage?

- What is a moderate to good wage in Basel for an expat in an operations management post? (have yet to negotiate with my company)

- Any tips on life out there.

Inevitably I will be asking things already previously posed on the forum, for that I apologise, but I hope that if any of you can help with at least one or two of my points above I would be sincerely grateful.

If the community on here is anything to go by it seems that you all have a great outlook on life in CH and have some great knowledge on enjoying the goods bits and overcoming the bad ones too.

Thanks in advance and apologies for the potential long thread...

Cheers!

Stuart

Re: Potential move to Basel from UK

Firstly and most importantly: welcome to the forum!!
Secondly, it's really important you search for answers on the forum that have already been given. "There's nothing new under the sun" and little new in a 5 year old forum. Have a look by clicking "search" in the top right hand corner of your screen and then clicking "advanced search" or "google powered". You'll find almost all your questions have already been answered. Any that haven't you can come back and start a thread in the appropriate forum, or if your question is close enough, just add a question to an existing thread.

Hi and Welcome Stuart!

I'm in (almost) the exact same boat as you and am considering a move to Basel.

Best of luck, and will be sure to post with any info I come across.

Re: Potential move to Basel from UK

Thanks for the info Village, I'm mighty impressed with the search function on here... greatly appreciate the links, I'll read up accordingly with a cuppa next to me.

Economisto - thanks for the heads up. I did fear that I would be venturing in to previously discussed territory but always good to get an updated view point from the forum. I shall search further! :-)

Bobster- let me know how things progress, who knows we may need to guide each other in exploring Basel's drink holes.

Cheers,

Disco Stu

Haha, I'd love to know what half of the usernames in here would come up with in google...

...although I must admit that I haven't used such a site. Must be some other capitalist! ;-)

Re: Potential move to Basel from UK

All this reading is making me cross-eyed, two cups of coffee in and finding it very interesting reading.

It seems that the majority of expats reporting have been in the 30+ age range, is that a fair assumption? I'm not casting aspersions intentionally but I wonder how those in the 25-30 age range have found the move... I may be opening myself up for abuse here! :-)

Welcome to the Forum.

I've moved this to Introductions since it is your introduction and as you'll get into trouble asking specific questions in this sub-forum, this will ensure that you post your requests for info (when you've read all the Sticky Threads, all the links, all the relevant posts!!) in the right places.

Have fun readiing.

And I call you a proper pillock for doing that. Here I mean putting a post on both sites to attract attention. Twunt.

At least Disco_Stu shows a sense of humour.

@Disco_Stu - I think you'll like the Basel mob. Less earnest than other parts of the country.

I am in that range and live in Basel. Mostly i love it. The quality of life is amazing, public transportation is the best and location is really great. It can feel a bit small comming from a big city but once you start to make friends (as long as you make the right ones!) it doesn't really matter about the size because with the right people anywhere can be fun! There is always something going on but if u get bored just hope on a train or a flight for the weekend and all is cured. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me.

Re: Potential move to Basel from UK

Thanks for your input Rose, nice to know that Basel isn't just for the old and wrinkly

I have a meeting tomorrow which will determine how viable the move will be based on the job at hand... relocation package to look at and all the finer details. Life in Basel seems incredibly attractive, with France and Germany at our doorstep, the mountains a car journey away for Skiing and MTBing, relatives in Bern and plenty of things to do and the lifestyle will be right up my street having lived in Sweden previously.

Watch this space.

The majority of the 25-30 age range couldn't stand the fast pace of life and went home to mum. Only the brave are left standing....mostly 30+ I'm afraid.
