Moving from London to Lausanne in July

Hello,
I am new to the forum and hope that someone out there might be able to help me with my long list of questions please.

Iím British and currently live in London.
I wish to relocate to Switzerland in the Canton of Vaud, maybe in Lausanne or surrounding areas. I am a single mum with two children ages 7 and 10.
However, we do not speak French but I hope for us to take up some French classes (anyone know a good french school for families in Lausanne)?

Without a job, I would appreciate your advice on what requirements I would need to provide, for a B permit before my business is up and running.

On Business side questions:

I wish to start a coffee and sandwich shop business in Lausanne.
I would be very grateful for some assistant with information on the formalities and requirements as to how to go about setting up a new business as an EU national in Lausanne?

I would also be grateful for some information and regulation rules on starting childrenís Day care centre as well as child minders?

I also welcome some information on what can kind of help and support is out there for new people starting up for the first time?

I would appreciate direction or links where I can conduct some basic research, such as find premises, and the cost of starting up.

On general side of the questions:

Iíve been told that I would need a job contract in order to acquire an apartment to rent... is this true? If so, is there a way of getting round this without a job offer?
If not, can someone recommend any reputable agencies that speak English which I can use in finding an apartment in Lausanne and the suburbs such as Ouchy, Pully and Vevey areas?...I was told these areas are good for education purposes, which brings me to my next question.

My oldest would be entering 1st year in secondary school in September this year should we stay in London, so I would like to know if it would be the same when we move to Lausanne this year or will she be put back to primary school?

Thanks you so much in advance for your help
Chris

Tough one, especially for the 10 year old as it is at that age approx. in the canton of Vaud, that the decision is made whether a child will be allowed to go on to high school or whether he/she will select a path which will lead him/her to an apprenticeship (learning a trade). Public school (state run) is free but in French only. Children are expected to catch up as soon as possible. Repeating a year is rarely heard of so the risk is that a child can be put in an "easier" class and thus cut out possibilities of a high education. Think that one out carefully

Migros School, www.ecole-club.ch

Without a job, I would appreciate your advice on what requirements I would need to provide, for a B permit before my business is up and running.
Not at all sure of this, but with out a job, I think you have to prove that you have the means to support yourself.

www.gastrovaud.ch Opening a coffee shop requires a Swiss "degree" now. Certificat de cafetier. It's a few months of school. Details can be found in the link where you can attend schooling (in French I believe, not sure that they offer any classes in English)

I would also be grateful for some information and regulation rules on starting children’s Day care centre as well as child minders?
no idea, but again Swiss qualifications will be required for sure

I also welcome some information on what can kind of help and support is out there for new people starting up for the first time?

sorry no idea, check out the forum to see if somebody has already asked these questions

On general side of the questions:

I’ve been told that I would need a job contract in order to acquire an apartment to rent... is this true?
yup, + last 3 salary sheets to prove it
If so, is there a way of getting round this without a job offer?
don't think so, unless perhaps you're wealthy and can prove you don't need to work
If not, can someone recommend any reputable agencies that speak English which I can use in finding an apartment in Lausanne and the suburbs such as Ouchy, Pully and Vevey areas?...I was told these areas are good for education purposes, which brings me to my next question.
they all speak English quite well as there are many expats here. Consider 2000 to 3000 SFr for a flat for 3 people

My oldest would be entering 1st year in secondary school in September this year should we stay in London, so I would like to know if it would be the same when we move to Lausanne this year or will she be put back to primary school?
answered above

Thanks you so much in advance for your help

Re: Help! Moving from London to Lausanne in July

Hello Sky,
Thank you so much for taking the time to give me quite detailed information on all the questions, Iím very grateful.
From what I understand, it may be quite difficult for my older child in terms of school placement.
I would be grateful to hear from other parents who have had the same experience.
Is this procedure the same across the country or just in Vaud? If not, what other canton would you suggest I look into?

Regarding getting a B permit and an apartment; do you think it would be possible to a get place if we were to pay for a whole year in advance (without a job offer letter or pay slips etc)?
I mean, we can certainly survive without a job for about a year, being the reason I would love to open a small business within that time frame.
Iíve heard that getting a job can be a very serious challenge and I suppose for me the language barrier doesnít help.
Though I am a Law graduate, and I have worked as a civil servant for the past 12 years within the finance department, I wouldnít know where to start (before I can speak the language) hence why my own small business as a starting point I thought would be ideal.
Can anyone else help ...maybe someone who has done it before or know people who have moved without having a job offer first?

I welcome other suggestions.
Thank you.

Hi Chris

I can't help with any of your questions as I came here with my husbands job last October and although I am starting to work as a self employed person I am in the very early stages and expect to have many hurdles to deal with yet!

If you do decide to come, either for a visit or to live please feel free to get in touch, send me a PM, and I would be happy to have a coffee, show you around and share my own experience of arriving here and starting again.

Good luck!
