New Jersey, USA to Switzerland

Hi!

My husband's job is being relocated from New Jersey, USA and we will be looking to live somewhere around Zurich because our kids may be going to ZIS. His job will be in Schaffhausen. He is expecting to go in June & we will follow in July (due to previous family commitments).

We have 2 boys, ages 10 & 13. We are all a little nervous about the move and are just learning to speak the language. We have never lived anywhere outside of N.J. I have always had a job working in the financial industry so it will be a big adjustment for me as well to be a stay at home mom.

We are hoping the boys will get into one of the international schools & are currently house/flat hunting in the Zurich area.

I've been searching this website & have found it extremely helpful. Thank you for this great resource.

I hope to continue to find helpful information, advice, and perhaps some friends on this forum!

Thank you
Barb

Barb, welcome to the forum -- and welcome to Switzerland soon too.

No reason for being nervous. Of course certain things may seem to be a bit difficult, but looking around on the forum will help a lot, and I'm sure the differences cannot be much bigger than say, between some parts of NJ and NYC. We have been commuting between rural Michigan, Detroit City and Switzerland for quite a few years without significant problems, dog included.

Re: New Jersey, USA to Switzerland

Greetings Barb!

Welcome to Switzerland and the forum.

Schaffhausen is very quaint, compact and picturesque as I recall from day trips there some years back. There are quite a number of expats based there and several on this forum, so hopefully you will make friends with some of them soon.

It's good that you are all as a family actively learning German before arriving. That will help a lot with settling in and integrating faster and more easily. Even just a basic grasp is better than nothing and which you can steadily build on once here.

All the best with the move and to your new life in Switzerland.

Re: New Jersey, USA to Switzerland

No apologies necessary. I appreciate all the information we can get.

My husband will be glad to hear your view of Schaffhausen.

We're also late night people....which I hear is different in Switzerland....things settle down earlier than we are used to. It could be a nice change though.

Take a look at these two websites for lots of info on Schaffhausen and the spectacular Rhine Falls. Just looking and remembering that waterfall gives me goose pimples (nice ones that is) and I sense another, long overdue day trip there coming on very soon...

Where I've lived, it took me a little while to get used to the streets being virtually deserted after 2100 in the evenings but I'm pretty much used to it now.

Re: New Jersey, USA to Switzerland

Welcome (soon) to Switzerland. I am originally from New York and have lived here 11 years. Actually, many parts of Switzerland remind me of upstate and central New York.

Not sure if you are already familiar with these two websites. They might prove helpful in your search for living quarters:

www.homegate.ch and www.home.ch

They are both in English, although information about particular properties will only be in German. However, most have plenty of pictures of the properties and the basic information is in English.
