Greetings

Hi Everyone,

I was directed to this website by friend who is a member here staying in Zurich, and said that I would be able to get the best advice and information from you all.

My wife is a PHD student in South Africa, who is currently working on an experiment at CERN. She has been made an offer to go work at CERN for a 2 year period as of the 21st of June 2011.

We are both very nervous about everything but it is a really big opportunity for her, and I dont see how I can say no. Its just trying to work out all the logistics of everything that are giving me nightmares. I know her funding is terrible great, and realise I will have to find work ASAP. However from what I have found out so far. It seems as if I might not be eligible for an "automatic" work permit since she is a CERN "user".

Still very excited, and worried all in one. Especially since we have a 10 month old son who will be making the trip with us.

Look forward to finding out more info and chatting to you all.

Welcome Kelvaer. You didnt mention your nationality which I assume is South African? As Cern sits on the Franco swiss border, if you have any concerns about a swiss work permit, you could apply first for a schengen visa to be able to come and go across the border and then if a job comes up, apply independantly for a permit. My colleague brought his wife ( Springbok also) to Geneva and they got a family visa. Best of luck

Re: Greetings

Hi all..

Yeah, We are both South African. Though we have both been to Geneva a few times. Claire (my Wife) has been there almost every 6 months for the last 4 years. Obviously with our newborn son she has missed a year, and is looking at catching up with her work now.

Currently we are thinking of staying in Saint Genis Pouilly, as the accommodation offered by CERN is a bit cheaper.

Her current "Package" is around 4000 CHF, though she is looking at organising more funding to try add to that. Just seems really tight for me, but oh well. Its been our goal to move over to Geneva in 3 years time.. this new offer, just speeds things up a bit for us all I guess, and I'm prepared to make the sacrifices if we need to. We are planning on keeping our house and things in SA and just rent out. But if I need to sell to help with funding, I guess I'll have to do that.

I was also thinking of applying for the permit independently as mentioned, Things have just happened really quickly on this side, But guess applying for it once in Geneva might be a better option

Oh.. and thanks all so far for the welcome

Re: Greetings

Welcome to the EF, Kalvaer!

You will be just fine on 4000fr, living in Saint Genis Pouilly, a CERN friends just moved out of there, I always liked the peace there and accessibility to schops, other practical things. Day care is a lot cheaper in FR, so are groceries, most kid activities, etc. If you have some time, search croque-loisirs , very handy.

If you wife likes to knit, we have an international knitting group once a week in Ge, in fact we have 3 CERN knitting scientist amongst us...funky trend.

Good luck with the move and all..

Re: Greetings

HAHA.. Hiya Nelly..

Thanks so much, I tried again yesterday and it finally allowed me to register. Really is a ton of information on this site. Its going to keep me busy for quiet a while

I am just waiting for my PCC to get back, though we have almost everything else sorted out. CERN sent the letters we require as well yesterday for both the French and Swiss applications. Will see if I get the PCC in time to go apply for the work permits, otherwise I will have to do it once we arrive.

@MusicChick, I'll pass on the info to her. Hopefully she will also be able to join here soon. We are just battling a bit to find accommodation suitable for us that's priced right, Even in SGP. But will keep on looking.

Right now we are also trying to go through all the Health Insurances and find out what is best for us. She has been told to check out http://www.goldencare.ch/eng/index.html from the BNL Laboratories that she is working with, Though I cant seem to find any information on them on this site?

Thanks again to all of you for the warm welcome
