| | Life in Lausanne. Hi, So as a Londoner here in Lausanne I think things are going to take a little time to get used to. Does anyone have tips on how to survive coming from a 24/7 city (where I could pop out for milk when I want a cup of tea late in the evening) to living here which is lovely but frustrating when you realize that your missing the right sauce for dinner on Sunday afternoon? As you can probably tell, I've recently moved here on my own and would like to make some friends away from the office whom I could hang out with and who enjoy doing some of the same things as I do. I'm keen to see what the mountains are like in the summer as I hear that the mountain biking is allot of fun, I want to visit some of the other parts of Switzerland (and surrounding countries), there is apparently a great outdoor thermal swimming pool about 20 mins from Lausanne. There must also be a hundred other exciting things that I've not even thought about yet. Perhaps some kind people could suggest some things or point me towards a good group here on Glocals, I've already seen that there are some nice book clubs and plenty of drinks nights. Well I really just wanted to say "Hi. How do you do?" to fellow expats here and break the ice, so there we go. I look forward to chatting and meeting some of you in the not too distant future. Take care. Dom. |

Hello Dom and welcome to the forum! Just wait for the Lausanne crowd to wake up..In the meantime, there is a lot of info here and our search button also yields some. By the way, we have a book meet up in two weeks in Morges, planning poetry club meet up there as well.

Hello Dom!
Welcome to lausanne! The society in here is not as big as in Zürich but I recall there were some evening drinks going on.
I think that Glocals is a good thing for a start but I have to say it's not so much my activity as I had a feeling it's a dating society Well, whatever works
ENjoy Lausanne!
cheers,
k

For starters, check out Chorus Jazz Club on Thursday night, 28 April. It's a great jazz club and this Thursday's gig is free entry, and the group look promising. http://www.chorus.ch/Chorus_Cadre.htm
Have heard Aline and Raphael in another group, Nolose, but the other two cats in the lineup look to have promise.
Its our own little 606 Club (backwaters of Chelsea, London). Chorus is located below Mon Repos indoor swimming pool.
Sure you might make some acquaintances there, if not music will be great.

Welcome to the Forum Dom, and you Lingh. Would the two of you like to meet up at the Choruz jazz club tonight?
Saturday afternoon you might want to go to the hot pools at Lavey, http://www.lavey-les-bains.ch/spa_fa...on.php?lang=en

welcome to lausanne! actually, i am also from a 24-7 city (nyc) and it hasn't really been too much of a problem getting used to life here. there are things open on sundays if you look around and there is a lot going on at night, especially in the spring-summertime. it may take a while to get the wheels really moving in terms of feeling at home, but it will come, i'm sure. there is the great escape which has football games and a ton of english speakers as well.
also, i know alot of expats like the etoile blanch- there are also indoor and outdoor pools if you want to swim. mont repos is a nice indoor pool and soon you'll have your choice of outdoor pools as well. i still haven't be to the jazz club near mont repos , i may have to head down!
another idea- why not set up an event to meet up with a few members and you can find out about your new city, the ins and outs

Thank you so much.. this is all very useful and very much appreciated. I am very much looking forward to moving out there now and it doesn't seem as daunting as it was.
Ittigen.. I will not be in Switzerland till end of next month but sure we can meet at the Jazz club one night!!
Excited about my move!!
Thanks guys!
Setting up an event would also be a great idea... to meet a few friends and get to go to a few places.
Okay will do this when I arrive in Switz.

Get on down there, Ms. '212'. Great vibe and really fine jazz players/gigs. Tonight's gig, 28 April, sounds like a great groove.
Alas I am here in the UK, otherwise I'd be there.

Hi All,
Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions.
I'm sorry that I missed the Jazz night. I must resolve to check on this forum more regularly so as not to miss something again.
I have not yet been to the mon repos area so will probably go and have a look around there today.
I have been looking at the events page and it looks like most things are happening in the Zurich area. Does anyone know how long/difficult is it to make a Lausanne-Zurich-Lausanne trip for an evening out?
Once I've settled in perhaps I'll just have to start arranging some local events myself.
Dom.

Dom. | | | | | Dom,
Long, difficult, and costly to go to Zurich for a night out; you'll probably have to get a hotel room if you want to burn the candle there at night, cause you will not get a train back to Lausanne (with a ~3.5 hour train ride?) at those hours.
Plenty to do in Lausanne. Just be patient and you will find those places.

Tiny | | | | | And plenty to do during the day here - don't waste them nursing a hangover. Just about to head out to do a little 20km tour of the city and vidy this afternoon :-)
