| | New to Switzerland.. new to Montreux
Hello all.. I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to this forum. This is my first time in a forum and the reason is because I will be moving to Switzerland Montreux next month for work.
I am from the UK and I like to keep myself busy.. work, gym, dining out, bars, cocktails, sight see and chill with friends.
Can anyone recommend me places to go.. does anyone know any good gyms in Montreux?
What do people do there on the weekends and is it best to have a car to get around? |

If you are interested in martial arts there is Aikido Montreux and everyone that trains there speaks English. It is a very nice and welcoming community, I trained and lived there for two years. The teacher is Patrick Cassidy (5th Dan) and is from America. - good luck!

You'll have plenty to do in July as the Jazz Festival will be on.
I'm heading down during the event and will be trying to get an EF meet one evening.

there are two gyms in montreux, don't remember the names though and quite a few activities- martial arts, mentioned above, capoeira, yoga, pilates, a public pool but it may be the easiest and most beautiful to take a run by the lake!
as for nights out, i'm not a huge fan of going out in montreux except for the jazz fest, that is a fun time! on the whole the bars near the lake are not my thing- although i don't go out too much there so there may be something there that i'm missing. if you can afford to have a car and pay for parking- it is quite nice to discover the area and have the freedom to get around, but we have been in lausanne for almost 2 years carfree and the train (and mobility) are working out great for us, so it isn't a necessity-
enjoy and welcome, it's a beautiful town!

LetGo Fitness (they have a .ch website of the same name) are in Montreux and if you join there you can go to the ones in Lausanne, Aigle and a few other places. about 700 CHF a year. The one in Vevey is a bit more businessman punter types like myself where we go along to try and hold off the pounds, the one in Montreux is for Muscle Central and birds with bikini bodies though anyone is free to go to to eachf course.
Montreux itself is a pleasant place to live, we lived there for 3 years until recently. If your working in Montreux itself then hurray, if your in Vevey or further afield its just a few mins on the train.
Have a great time, I am sure you will.

Hi Stane - the nightclubs sound fun? do they play good music?
MikeB - I will definitely check out the fitness clubs. IN the UK i am with virgin gym so anything similar would be good.

Absolutely no need for a car if you live in Montreux - Swiss trains and buses are well integrated. Do you like skiing and hiking - amazing places can be reached by train + bus.

lived a year in Montreux.
One of the nice things is there is no locals there. just tourists and foreigners.
Nightclubs would be Black pearl (younger crowd and the Millesime in the palace. you will be partying with some of the richest kids there and it is quit decadent.
the best about montreux is the view and the tourist.
main 2 events are the jazz and the xmas market.
a bar I always went to was the white horse. old british pub like.....
you can get anywhere by train form montreux and parking is nearly impossible.....
have fun

yeah you will be fine. most are 18-21 tho (student crowd but you have other places also.
There is harry s bar right next to the milisime which is more spendy but a classier crowd. but those are the 2 main ones....
Be prepared to pay outrages prices at these clubs tho. 10 chf for a heiniken for example......
