new to forum, nyc to zurich a year ago

Dear all -

I have often come across this forum when searching about zurich and switzerland and found it super useful so I thought I would join.

I moved here from NYC in March of 2010 but grew up in NC in the USA.

I hope to be able to contribute to the forum as I have now learned a few things here and there. I look forward to communicating with y'all.

The things I have enjoyed most about Switzerland so far are the mountains (I climb and hike and camp etc) and learning to ski this past winter .

Shilpa

Hey Shilpa
I moved to Zurich in December 2010 from NC (Raleigh) and grew up in NYC. Where are you from in NC? Nice to *meet* you

Hi Sue -

Wow small world. I grew up in Raleigh, went to high school in Durham and college in Chapel Hill! Where in Raleigh were you living? I grew up around Leesville Rd. (way before it was developed at all ). Where in nyc did you grow up?

We were living just off Wade Ave by Cameron Village. I was working in RTP for a biotech company. I grew up in Queens (Flushing, Bayside, Douglaston) and lived mostly in Manhattan (E58th and 1st Ave) during High School/College.

Small world indeed- hello fellow triangle people! My husband and I went to graduate school in the triangle (I'm a tar heel and he's a blue devil- it's a wonder we've made it work).

My sister and her family still live there- it's a great place. I really miss it sometimes (especially the NC BBQ.)

Sue, I lived in Queens my last few years in new york (in Astoria ) and before that was around 1st and 20th.....and I spent quite a bit of time hanging around Cameron Village while in high school (not really sure why )

Hi Amy,
I am a tar heel fan, have been my whole life though I have to say I know and am close to many duke folks as well. Watch any bball this spring? The triangle is a great place thought I am vegetarian so dont know about the bbq!

Wow...I used to work and live right outside of the city in NJ in the late 1980's.

We also lived in Chapel Hill 1995-2007. I have to say I had a like-hate relationship with the place. We both worked for UNC - husband was a prof, I was an admin at the hospital. Our dog came from the Greensboro shelter.

Some really nice people there though, and I miss Elmo's diner and Margaret's cantina. Fried okra, too.

Never quite got into the sports thing though - and we knew so many people at both Duke and UNC it didn't matter.

Super small world. So I went to undergrad at UNC and graduated in 2003, any chance I had your husband as a prof?

What did you like? What did you not like about Chapel Hill? I think it would be super super different for me now, since I only lived there as a student....

Elmo's, yummmm!

if you took poli sci maybe, tho he taught mostly grad students.
i think chapel hill would be fun for students... i just found it to be an ok place to live, but nowhere near the southern part of heaven people claimed.... i am a contrary person, and got tired of people telling me how fab it was. plus, i hated the heat.

otherwise, it was fine, comfortable, pretty safe. not too crazy. i like it here better though.
