Thought I'd say HELLO...

...and have a polite first post rather that starting my visits to this forum with a load of questions!

So a big 'hello there' to all of you

I've recently fulfilled a dream I've had for the past 10 years, and have acquired a place of my own in Verbier. It's only a tiny apartment but it's mine. I'm still in 'can't quite believe it' mode as I was really rather lucky.

The 10 years dream comes from the fact that I've been holidaying in the Swiss Alps for around 12 years (couldn't afford to until my mid 20s!), and fell in love with Verbier as soon as I arrived there.

It goes without saying that I love the mountains, whether snow-covered or not. However I love virtually everything about the place. Yes, there are far too many English and this means a lot of visitors don't need to speak French (and hence don't bother) - the *obnoxious* hooray henrys (yes, there are German ones as well...) are the only downside, IMO. I make as much effort as possible to stick to French unless I run out of words, I've always loved the language. Of course, I'm not doing the 'too many English' problem any favours by buying a place out there The Valais locals are great - I found it infinitely harder to 'get' the German Swiss in the few non-French-Swiss places I've visited, very much more 'closed books' emotionally - but I feel a lot more on the same wavelength in the south western corner. Oddly, I am from the south western corner of England, originally...

Current plans are to spend at least one long weekend if not more every month out there - it's not an investment and I won't be renting it out to randoms. Medium term plans are to attempt to get the necessary permissions to set up a company and be able to work in Geneva (I do freelance business systems consultancy for asset management firms in London currently via my UK limited company, I'd like the option to do the same in Geneva with the wide range of potential client firms there). Ultimately I'd like full residency / passport (which may be impossible, but I intend to try - I'll be searching this forum) as I have no intention of living in the UK when I get old. Hopefully by then I'll have moved up the ladder and got a slightly larger place in Verbier!

I sound like a holidaymaker but I'm in this for the long haul - with the uncertain global future, having multiple options where one can live and work is absolutely critical!

Anyway hi there to everyone else in the Valais

Agree with you there if one is fortunate enough to be in a position and able to do that...

Re: Thought I'd say HELLO...

Hello: My son Brit/Swiss spent a while as a ski teacher for the Swiss School in Verbier. He loved it, but has now bought himself a place in Champery because it was cheaper.
