Arrived in Geneva

Hi all,

Been lurking in the Permits forum for a couple months, but now diving into all the rest as I've arrived with a job and visa/permit in hand!

Long story short, 29 year old Canadian from the Ottawa/Toronto area. About a year ago had entire life go belly-up starting with a lay-off from a Fortune 500. Temporary work and previous clients brought me to Geneva last summer, where I met my wonderful partner. All roads pointed to CH, and after some effort here I am.

Starting as an engineer at TSR/RTS next week. Any other expats working there?

Currently going through the nightmare (the word isn't strong enough!) of finding accommodations for us in GE. Its a war out there, and I feel like I showed up with some capris and a bb gun. As they say, anything worth having isn't easy.

I'm slowly learning how it all works here - the positives have far outweighed the negatives. Getting used to throwing money whenever I open a door, or pick up a pen, etc. The urge to open a grocery store open past 7 is overwhelming, but I guess I'll get used to that too!

I'm an anglo but very fluently bilingual so at least thats not a pressure. I find most Swiss make light hearted, fun comments about the french-canadian accent as opposed to the blank stares and cold shoulders I'm used to from the French, which has been wonderful.

Would love to meet a group of folks for pints here and there, so if that sort of thing interests you feel free to drop me a message. I'm usually good at buying the first round.

Cheers, and thanks to all for the help so far.

-Adam

Welcome finally to CH! It's tough out there. But hang in there. I'm sure you'll find something appropriate. Good luck!

Re: Arrived in Geneva

Welcome to the area. It's tough with housing here, isn't it. But a couple of friends have been very successful (actually Canadians themselves, too), just need patience.

If you need groceries past 7, just wait for the train station being finally done reconstructing, there is a food store open late, I think it was 10pm. And pharmacy, as well.

Re: Arrived in Geneva

Welcome,

There is a Migros at the airport that is open at night and on sundays in case you are desperate (take a train at the station and it will only be a couple of minutes).

Housing is tough but you will eventually find something.

Good luck!

Hi Adam will be moving out to the Geneva area myself shortly (9th June) and will initially be in Lausanne so let me know if you fancy getting a beer or coffee.
