Moving to Zurich in Summer

Hi,
I'm currently in the UK, and have been offered a one year job in Zurich so will be moving over in Summer.

I speak no German, and nether does my toddler.
I am a single parent who will have to pay full time childcare and thus will have no money.

I am really looking forward to going.

Re: Moving to Zurich in Summer

You've picked a great time of year for arriving.

Just some basic High German should get you quite far here, at least when it comes to dealing with people in stores, on trams, etc. and especially if your stay here is only temporary.

I wish you the best of luck!

Re: Moving to Zurich in Summer

Thanks, I think my toddler will be going to a german speaking pre-kindergarten so I am trying to teach her some basic german, bit like the blind leading the blind.
Well,l the job has the possibility to extend if I do well, but I will have to see if I have any money left at the end

I'm moving to Zurich also for a job that starts in August. One of the Groupon offers today was for 6-months of online language training (German is one of the languages offered) for £5. I'm not sure how good it is but I paid for the access. I think the deal runs until midnight tonight if you are interested. Link here..

Welcome to the forum
About childcare, if you are a able to send your toddler to a state-run daycare, you will be charged according to what you earn. If you need help finding some in the area you will be living in, let me know and I can have a look and see if I can help you get on a waiting list from this side.

Thanks, That's really nice. I will be working at the university so am trying to get her onto the linked nurseries waiting lists. As yet I've not idea where I will be living. Not Zurich city, can't afford that, probably Dubendorf as someone from the university is giving me some advice and lives there. Only 30 minute commute I think.

I know that childcare places are like gold dust, but can't really get her into one near where I will live until I know where I live. And yes, I know accommodation is gold dust too.

Be glad it's only one year
One can deal with anything for one year
and hopefully enjoy
Life in Switz only gets worse
You will appreciate home so much more
From what I heard they passed a law that prekindergarten is now in Swiss German dialect
Beware bad habits which may be picked up at school
This is discussed in book ticking along with Swiss

Really? Who knows when this madness will end! Next thing you know American preschoolers will be taught in American English rather than proper English. I mean, really! Tut tut tut!

I think you need to have ten posts, then the appropriate button appears.

So here's a legitimate reason to get your 10th post......how are your moving plans going?

Re: Moving to Zurich in Summer

Well, so far so-so.

I came to look at apartments last weekend, and found one I really like, close to work (just a bus ride), affordable, and the current tenant wants to sell the furniture so I wouldn't have to worry about that. Two problems, it's a bit small (but then it's in Zurich city so I'm not shocked) and I need to put loads of things with my application that I don't have yet, like my permit etc.

Also, the university nursery has most of a place for my kid, 3 days and 2 half days, starting on the 5th rather than the 1st, not sure what to do about that, but it's better than nothing.

So getting there. Slowly.

On the plus side, I actually got to see the city this time, when I came for my interview I was there for 18 hours, half of that I was asleep, the other half I was in the airport or being interviewed.

Got to say, I think Zurich is beautiful, and ran into a really helpful complete stranger in the English book shop who sat with me for 10 minutes going over various aspects of moving over.

Re: Moving to Zurich in Summer

I was there for just about 24 hours when I came over for my interview. I haven't been back since accepting but have been looking at flats online. I'm not even going to try to apply for somewhere until I move there, so it will have to be temporary accommodation or a short sub-let for the first month or three. I haven't seen much of Zurich yet but hope to visit in July. It's just me moving so things are a lot simpler (at least so far!). I start at the beginning of August.

Abi do check out Tammy's Day Care. No contract required, 17CHF per hour or 88CHF per day. This should cover the 5 days you need help with. Our daughter just turned 1 and we had the first day yesterday. It was great!

When you get here...I do a shopping tour and am happy to meet up in Zurich (and am a teacher of children 0-3 and mum to 3 of my own so definitely kid-friendly!) - I can certainly show you lots of ways to save money on food and shopping for kids!

I get the impression things will be easier to apply from there than here. Maybe I'm being unrealistic about getting sorted before I go. But I think the move will be disruptive enough for my toddler without have to do it twice.
