NEW to switzerland (neuchatel or bern?)

Hi guys! I might possibly be moving to Switzerland (I'll know by the end of the week)...Its great to see there is a good expat society as that helps to make friends a little bit easier

So my job would be in Neuchatel, but I'm not sure whether its better to live in Bern because it probably more fun and cheaper (tax etc)...If anyone has had to make this kind of decision when moving to Switzerland, I would be great to hear your personal experience.

Thanks a lot folks! Hope to see you around soon

Hi and welcome. I'd choose Neuchatel any day - but hey, this is my home town, so I am biased, lol.

haha! Well I¡m slightly inclined for Neuchatel because of the lake views which are beautiful, but it looks like the taxes will be significantly higher there

Neuchatel is French speaking - if you need this for work, it's probably best to stay with one language; whereas Bern is German speaking.

well, they only require English, although its another thing to bear in mind given that I speak a little French and no German (willing to learn)....However, I think there are more expats in Bern so it possibly might be better for making friends and doing stuff?? Please correct me if I'm wrong !

There are quite a few ex-pats in Neuch- and Bern is not far for going out, etc. Correction, they do not speak German in Bern, but Berntutsch- it's like saying they speak English in Glasgow!! lol.

There seems to be more, and better attended, EF social events in Neuchatel than in Bern, from what appears here - accepting, at the same time, there is a world of ex-pats and related activities outside and independent of EF in Bern (especially if you enjoy mixing with the multi-national diplomatic community).

Re: NEW to switzerland (neuchatel or bern?)

I would choose Neuchatel too even though the taxes are the highest in Switzerland.
If you lived in Bern you'd have travel costs and travelling time to consider too.
There are quite a lot of English speakers in Neuchatel too. If you go to cafe du cerf you'll meet loads of people.
Accommodation is pretty easy to find in NEuchatel too.

Just my opinion and I'm not biased at all of course.

Looks like there are more votes for neuchatel! I've been looking and I cant seem to find anywhere which is furnished in neuchatel...im not sure if this is normal in switzerland?¿?...i've been to cafe du cerf, nice place, but i hope neuchatel has more nightlife to offer than that

Yeah furnished places are not that easy to find here. There are a few about but they're basically one room places aimed at students. You'll probably have to get an unfurnished place then make a trip to IKEA like everyone else or take advantage of some of the bargains offered on here.

The cerf isn't the only nightlife in Neuchatel but it is the place where all the English speakers meet.

If you like karaoke Kamarate is the person to get to know as she organises frequent karaoke nights

How long would you be staying? It is not easy to find furnished accom in Switzerland. However, furniture and all sorts of stuff are regularly offered here on EF, either free or very cheap. There are also many places you can buy second hand, etc. I could lend you stuff until you find your own- (against a deposit) if it helps.

Re: NEW to switzerland (neuchatel or bern?)

I agree with Odile, I have lived in both & Neuch was by far the better place to live. Despite being the capital & a University town Bern is rather sleepy if you are into nightlife and having fun.

I see you like trekking - the Jura is a great place for walking, mountain and road biking - even skiing/snowboarding (although last winter was rubbish!).

Lausanne is a lot of fun compared to Neuchatel (my perception - could be biased), but you are right it's a bit far (70 km). Having said that, I have a lot of friends working in Neuchatel and living in Lausanne because of the same thoughts.
