Moving (back) to Fribourg next month...

Hi!
I am new on this forum.
I will be moving back to Fribourg (where I was born) next month. We left Switzerland to live in Scotland (north glasgwegian suburb) in 2003, initially for 9 months, but at the end we've been here for already 8 years.
I have got 2 daughters aged 12 and 5 years old and I am looking for English speaking mums and families around Fribourg...
I am looking forward to hearing about you!

Welcome back to Switzerland.
And welcome to the EF.
I hope you have a great time with your family.

PS: I came here for 15 days.
That was about 7 years ago.

Welcome to EF, and welcome (back) to Fribourg .
My wife is a member of the Fribourg Expat Women's Group, they seem to organise a fair bit in the area.

Welcome back (in advance), and welcome to EF.

Are you originally from the city or the country? .... and do you have any idea as to where you'll be re-locating?

At present we are living in a German speaking part between Fribourg and Schwarzsee, but in August will be moving to Courtaman (Cne. Courtepin), on the other side of the city.

We also have 2 girls - 11 and 4 - who are both fluent in English and German - the eldest is learning French in school. She will start her 6th class at the primary school in Courtepin, and then go to the German speaking secondary school in Fribourg (Gambach), next year. The youngest is set to start KG.

Oh ... I'm the dad, btw, and English, and my Swiss wife attempts to keep me in the lifestyle to which I've become accustomed (i.e. she's the breadwinner).

And as Kev wrote above, the Highland Games is a great day/weekend out, and I'm sure many of us EFers have stumbled over each other, without realising, in past years. But, unfortunately, as it is exactly at the time when we're moving, I may end up missing it (for the 2nd year running - d'oh) ...... plus I'm no longer on the organised bus route, which now makes drinking the entire Games supply of Guinness less feasible.

Re: Moving (back) to Fribourg next month...

Hi TiMow!
Thanks for your message!
I used to live in the city of Fribourg (Schonberg) until I was about 20yo and then moved to Geneva for my university studies and then to Scotland. We now will be living in Villars-sur-Glane but I know where Courtaman is

My daughters are also both fluent in English as they are going to school here. The older one will start secondary school in August (CO de Perolles) and for the youngest one, it's a bit more tricky: she is 5yo and is finishing her P1 here in Scotland (can read and "write" in English). So we'd prefer her to start a P1 in Fribourg but she is young for the Swiss school system so she will attend a 4 hours evaluation in August to determine if she can start in primary school rather than going back to KG as you say... We'll see.

Is your wife from Fribourg as well?

I would be very happy to meet up with you all once everybody will have settled down a little bit! We'll hopefully keep in touch...

I will probably go to the Highland games for the fun and maybe a nice cider...

Oh that's funny! We'll live in Chemin des Marronniers...

My 12 yo daughter is totally stressed about going to secondary school, especially about taking the bus on her own to go there... Maybe she will meet your daughter and she will be able to re-assure her...

OK, you'll be about 100m from us then . Taking the bus can be a little daunting, my daughter says it gets a little prrimeval in the hunt for bus seats in the morning .

How funny!

Yes, I can remember how it was when I had to take the bus in the morning... I am sure my daughter will get used to it

Hubby is already living in chemin des Pins and we'll "land" there from the 12th of July and then, at the beginning of August, we'll move to chemin des Marronniers...

Just check your neighbours and avoid any who talk with a funny accent, and have the appearance of a tin miner.

She's originally from St Antoni, so hasn't fallen too far from the tree - although, like you, she went AWOL for a number of years, only to get moved back here in 2000 - where, funnily enough, we spent the first year, back then, living with my M-i-L in Schönberg (Av. Jean-Marie Musy), whilst I renovated our current house. We may have been neighbours - in a time warp kind of way.

Re: Moving (back) to Fribourg next month...

Yes, I'll be carefull ;-) Thanks for the advice! Anyway, the "concierge" already told Hubby that our future neighbours are Australian (I think) and that there was another English speaking family not far... That guy knows his job ;-)

Oh yes, I know Jean-Marie Musy well: when I was a child, I used to live in Henri-Dunant... ;-) But I left Fribourg about 20 years ago I am afraid (I spent 12 years in Geneva and 8 in Scotland)... Bouhouhou, already!

My first address in Switzerland was Henri-Dunant, only lived there for a few months, before moving into the sticks to Alberwil, near Düdingen.

..... a small world - and full of irrelevant and insignificant coincidences;
- par example: Alberwil - a small cluster of a few houses (driven through/past/over), if you blink, you miss it, and yet when we move, we will be renting out our current house to a couple (and their 3 dogs), who are presently renting part of a farmhouse .......

....... in Alberwil.

Yep ..... that's the address we have - apparently the upstairs part.
Some old git lives below (well, an old couple, but she's supposed to be fine) - just him, that's, by all accounts, not the best neighbour in the world - acts like he owns the joint, although he's only renting too.

That's why they're keen to move, plus we have a good size fenced garden that would suit their 3 dogs.

I hope this isn't turning into some weird triangle of karma - with all these inter-connected coincidences.

Bet you wish you hadn't lost your lucky coin, now? (*do my best Vincent Price, end of Thriller video laugh* --- ha ha ha ha ha)

Re: Moving (back) to Fribourg next month...

Yep, we lived in the upstairs flat, sub-let from a former colleague of mine and her husband who rented the whole shebang from Herr Krattinger . It was actually a great place to live, we loved it. Unfortunately my colleague was buying a house so gave us the option to move downstairs and sublet the top, or just move on. That suited my wife as she doesn't speak a jot of German and couldn't communicate with our neighbours, so we moved on. Was a very happy year though (we got married in the middle of it).
Enough about me.....
