| | Lost in Lausanne!
Dear all,
I will be moving to Lausanne this Autumn (not decided exactly yet, depends on finding somewhere to live) to start a PhD at EPFL... Fed up with the bureaucracy in British Universities, and the decreasing value placed on doctoral students by the UK government, I am now very excited to be moving to Lausanne to study!
My background is in Maths, but I am not your stereotypical maths graduate. I love to socialise, especially going to see live sets by famous DJs and bands, and I absolutely love the mountains, having done a ski-season in Chamonix last year. Looking forward to meeting you, but please don't think I'm not going to embrace the Swiss culture as well!
Belinda

Welcome - and great that you enjoy skiing as Lausanne is very near to so many resorts (closest being Villars, Les Diablerets, Torgon/Portes du Soleil, less than 1 hour away). But for bureaucracy and the clubbing scene- well, you'll see..
Lausanne is great actually - the nicest town in CH I think.

Thanks for the interest... its going to involve the mathematical modelling of avalanches - probably the most exciting thing I can think of using maths for! Field work hasn't been promised but fingers crossed!

If you did your homework ( )you might find you are heading to the bureaucratic capital of Europe... Only joking, that would be Zurich!
You'll work that one out for yourself though!

I lived in Lausanne for some years, and I still miss it.
When you are looking for accommodation: It's not unusual that the kitchens have neither stove nor fridge - usually the tenant moves these from his old apartment to the new one.
There are some fully equipped apartments available, but they are more expensive.
On electronic music: I must apologize, there I have no clue at all. But what I did when I moved to a new place, I went to the weekly Couchsurfing meeting to meet locals :-)

Hi Belinda
Tiny Tim here from down the road in Oxford, and Lausanne.
Live music - there is also Chorus Jazz in Lausanne centre, below Mon Repos swimming pool. Check it out, a cool vibe and great live music. 'Jazz' encompasses a big periphery. http://www.chorus.ch/Chorus_Cadre.htm
Chorus is closed for for the summer season, but reopens 06 October.
Cheers
Tiny

Just moved to Lausanne myself. My husband works at EPFL and loves it! I'm sure you'll have a great time here in grad school.

You'll work that one out for yourself though! | | | | | Just meant with respect to universities - it took months to get a reply for any UK uni's, and a couple of weeks to get confirmation from EPFL. But thanks for the heads-up anyway!
