New (too) in Basel

Hi everyone, I've been "lurking" for a few weeks now and really appreciate all the useful advice on the forum I moved to Basel at the beginning of May and have been fairly consumed until now with arranging housing/bank accounts/health insurance/ trips to Ikea etc, and finding my feet at work (I think 'Onboarding' is the word in local corporate Denglish). I do understand and speak Hochdeutsch but this is obviously little help when trying to keep up a coversation amongst the locals. I think I have just reached the point where I would really appreciate more contact with fellow english speaking people, particularly at weekends.

So this is a pre-emptive hello! I hope to make it to an event sooner or later, or else may organise something myself. Picnicking or grillieren in the park is especially appealing at the moment, and I'm also keen to explore the area (and wider Europe) if anyone is up for travelling at the weekends. Otherwise culture, coffee, dinner, drinks, film-nights or simply 'chillaxing' by the Rhine are all feasible alternatives (At 23 "ironic" quotation marks already seem necessary when attempting youth speak...).

Hope to meet some of you soon!

Welcome to EF, ol' fogey.

At least your eyes are (presumably) still good enough to read that skinny font.

Welcome to Basel and to EF!

Now that summer is upon us (apparently ) there are usually plenty of events going on. Keep your eyes on the social events section and maybe we'll see you at one of the BBQ's/curry nights etc.

Hey ES. Welcome to EF, welcome to Basel and well done for de-lurking.

There's lots of stuff that happens in Basel and the Basel folk are so much nicer than those in other cities.

Keep an eye on the Events Calendar to see what's going on.

Hello and welcome to Basel! I'm newer than you are here so I guess I can't really welcome you but welcome nonetheless. Hope to see you around sometime soon.

Welcome! seems like we arrived at the same time and it took both of us 2 months to realise that Schwyzerdütsch are nice but it's also good to know the international community I wanna organise a "newbies" meeting soon as it seems that a lot of us joined in the past months, so might see you then!

Re: New (too) in Basel

When i'm saying "newbies" meeting i mean where all of us newcomers should try to be present and me the "veterans" not meaning I want to create a subgroup"We're new in Basel and really don't want to talk to people who have been there for a while already". Such a name is too long for a subgroup anyway

Re: New (too) in Basel

I moved to Basel in April but have been a forum member longer than that as I was studying in Lausanne.

Now that I live/work here full-time I would definitely like to get to know some other "usländer" living here!

I missed the July curry night post but will be sure to catch the August one, definitely one of my favourite dishes!

See you all soon hopefully
