Hello

Hello to everybody,

I'm new in the forum and possibly new in Zurich in the very near future.
I thinking a family relocation in Zurich due to the economical conditions here in Greece. We thought about zurich first of all because of the high quality of life and secondly cause that we are both english speakers so we believe that we will able to communicate more easily in Zurich than in geneva or any other french speaking part of Swiss. Here , i would like your opinion. Is our thoughts correct ? Is indeed the communication and in general the daily processes in Zurich possible in english language only ? Or it will be very difficult to communicate? We also have 2 kids aged 3,5 years old and 5 months old that i believe that will not have big problem to learn the language. But as you understand our daily communication is essential.
Anyway, greetings to everybody and any advise are welcome !

Thanks.

Re: Hello

Hi and welcome,

From what I can understand, Zürich has the highest population of 'English speakers' so the ease of living here is only relative to the country..... Just because you speak English doesn't make it easier.... GERMAN makes it easier.

In saying that (as an ONLY English speaker (currently)), it isn't as easy as you think, and prepare yourself for a few difficulties - but we all go through these things.

The crowd here on the EF are extremely helpful with what you will need to find out and inviting yourself along (actively encouraged) to a few "Social events" will help you find your feet faster (if only in the English speaking community).

I know there is a 'Greek' population here, so finding them to ask for their "home town" perspective would help you a lot more.

Try to remember this - most people on this site have been through what you are about to experience, so don't be shy when asking questions.

Make use of the "Search" function at the top right corner and most of your questions will have already been answered..... for anything else, just post a thread.

I wish you the best of luck moving here, and hope you and your family settle in nicely.

Re: Hello

Thanks billhardie. I have already covered many of my questions by reading posts and the sticky's on the forum. So, many things are now very clear to me. As for the language, speaking German will surely make things even easier but once again as I understand, we can "survive" in the beginning using only our English skills.I'm not sure if the same applies for the French speaking areas like Geneva. As for the different areas on which we can relocate to Zurich, probably we can make things even easier if we choose an area on which many other Greeks people also live, but i haven't searched yet. When the final decision will be made and we start looking for a house for rent, then I will start searching about the exact area on which we are interested to move in.
Anyway , even if we don't take the decision finally, I'm very happy to be a member here and find answers and support to my questions/thinkings.
Regards !
