1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Some suggestions might be why you are here, where you are from, how long you have been here, etc. You may also wish to update your profile information under "my settings" so people can know a little more about you.
Good evening all,
I've been lurking for a while and it's about time I introduce myself.
I'm a Brit with 2 young daughters and a Polish partner. My girls are my life.
I've lived and worked nearly all my life in the UK. That's to change when we relocate to Geneva in October.
I've spent 12 months studying Spanish in preparation for a different move; I'm taking a lot of stick at work right now for "learning the wrong language"....
I'll be sure to post again with questions - once I've exhausted the search function. | The following 9 users would like to thank HIAO for this useful post:

Welcome to the Forum HIAO. Try not to see having learnt Spanish as a mistake, but rather as another string to your bow! It may also help in your acquiring French! | The following 2 users would like to thank NSchulzi for this useful post:

Hi HIAO
Nice intro.
Welcome to the forum and soon to Switzerland.
You've still got a bit of time to get in some of the "right" language training before you get here. Just when you'll have got that down pat after a few years and perhaps forgotten most, if not all your Spanish, guess what will happen next!?
Good for you on embracing the search function. Very handy be dat!
Cheers, have fun and good luck with the move!

OK. I don't have the post count yet to thank. But thank you for the welcome.
Nicholaschulz - Thanks. I've enjoyed learning Spanish, but I feel a sense of urgency with learning French. I'm worried I'll be left behind by my 3 and 8 year girls who'll be fluent in no time.
jrspet - oops. first post, and first mistake - I pasted it for inspiration, posted, then didnt know how to edit the post.... I've not started searching for housing. Employment will be in Geneva; we might live outside. I understand the market is "instant" and costly. P.S. great avatar (says my 8 year old)!
economisto - muy buena idea....
isha - thank you. :-)
Phil MCR - ah hah! Reading some posts have indicated that questions about salary, cost of housing etc. are the questions the forum enjoys being asked often...

Don't worry too much about the French. Learning any language helps in learning others; it's not so much about memorizing vocabulary and grammar as the process. And at least you are moving to Geneva- French and Spanish share the same root; you could have been going to Zurich .
Your kids will learn it faster, if they are enrolled in local schools. But even old farts can progress quickly if they open their ears and put aside fears about speaking poorly. French speakers seem much more sensitive about pronunciation than poor grammar or choice of words... I think it actually literally pains them to hear typical Anglophonic perversion of their language. Practice those phlegmy guttural rrr's. If you get that right you're cooking with gas .

It really is a good start to the day to see someone who wrote a nice introduction. Not making the mistake of giving too many private details (which the Mods then have to delete) but enough that we feel we know a little about you. | Quote: | | | | | I've spent 12 months studying Spanish in preparation for a different move; | | | | | Reading this, my interpretation of your location 'TBC' is 'in Theory BarCelona'.
Have fun and don't get too angry with the search function. It usually turns up a great list of irrelevant Threads and refrains from listing the one which really has the information you are looking for.

A short update.
Next Saturday, my girls and I make the one way trip we've been planning for months.
For 3 months, we'll be in Versoix, while we look for somewhere long term. We haven't decided where, perhaps a little further out, like Nyon.
We'd be delighted to make friends through EF. It might be pushing it, but if there's Polish speakers in the EF community, it would be welcomed by the girls.
The excitement is building...
HIAO
