| | Just arrived in Basel
Hello everyone,
I posted a couple of questions without doing my intro first!! So I start my intro with an apology..... but you all seem like a nice bunch, so hopefully you won't hold this against me
So, here goes.... I've just arrived (today!) in Basel from the UK - Hampshire to be precise. I've been coming to Basel with my work for the last 10 years, and finally decided to make the move. Unfortunately, lovely husband has to stay in the UK for a few more months
I like to try and keep fit (mainly to counter the effects of good food & wine) so will be jogging around the beautiful city and signing up for lots of group fitness classes.
I've just done my first food shop at Migros, which took ages - mainly because I couldn't work out which milk was 'semi-skimmed'
Still feeling a bit emotional after leaving all my friends and family, but looking forward to life in CH and glad to have found the EF!

We moved from Hampshire (Hartley Wintney) to Basel (Oberwil) in January of this year and remember well the emotional feelings flying out of the UK on New Years Eve!! However, as my husband had been working here for 18 months while I stayed back in the UK with our 3 daughters it was certainly time to take the plunge!
6 months and a few wobbles later we are beginning to feel settled and enjoying our time here and have no doubt it will continue to get easier and easier as time goes by and we begin to understand how the Swiss systems work.
Good luck with getting yourself sorted and make sure you keep EF on your 'favourites' bar - its a great source of information and entertainment!
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions
Claire

Welcome. Come to the Basel Dragons Running club - we meet on Monday and THursday evenings at 1830hrs, at the club rooms that are directly under the Westeinbrucke - go down the steps beside the bridge on the Gross Basel side. There are 3-4 groups, catering to all levels of runners ( beginners, fun runners, middle distance and marathon runners. ) Members come from many countries, all sorts of ages and we have plenty of social get togethers as well. :-)

When I first came here I spent ages looking for sugar until I realised the reason 'there wasn't any' was because I was, in my subconscious, looking for blue packets of Tate and Lyle Granulated - and here the packet was white!
Nice intro - you learn fast. |

If so, you are welcome to join me for a Saturday morning bike ride across the border to the outdoor market in St Loius, and the Fr supermarket, the french cafe, across the bridge to the mall in Germany.... |

Hi, God, you sound just like me... lol..
My husband moved out to Basel a year ago and now after eventually packing the whole house etc my daughter (age 9) and are are moving out with him (horray!) in 20 days time.
I did exactly the same thing with the milk the first time we came to visit and stay in Basel. I have no German either but am hoping to learn very very soon.
You will soon find your feet and start to be very relaxed and comfortable. Im sure.
I have had a lot of reassurance from some wonderful people on here as i still continue to have panic attacks about being away from family and friends.
Good luck and wish you all the very best.. |

Welcome to the EF and Basel. I am sure you will love it. You'll get used to everything in no time. I spent 3 months here last summer.
I'm jealous that you get to stay, I can't stay (didn't find work) so have just been back for visits. This is my last one as I am heading back to Oz in August. (So glad I got to Fasnacht for the first time this year!)
But I've had a great year of coming and going and will definitely be back. Might even make more of an effort to find a job instead of just deciding on a long holiday - improving my German in the meantime perhaps!!
You're also in a better position of having 'home' not so far away so you can get back for visits. But go on holidays in CH too, it's fabulous.
All the best, enjoy it all. |

Welcome to Switzerland. I know exactly what you feel as I am from Asia and decided living here in Switzerland.
I live in Zurich but I know Basel because I used to work as a massage therapist to a Luxury River Cruising Company from Basel to Amsterdam.
Basel is nice, and for sure you will meet lots of people to become friends and soon you will be fine:-)
Have a nice day!

Welcome to Basel! I'm a newbie here myself. I'm quite impressed with your milk discovery. I still go for whatever kind looks to be the most 'resealable' because I really don't trust the fridge in my temporary flat (but I'm officially moving into my own place in a couple of days so no worries). I guess there's no hope of soy milk, huh? Maybe that's just an oddity. Hope to see you around Basel sometime soon.

In Geant Casino, they also sell meat for dogs, if your puppy might be interested.

@ the OP - welcome & it's "Drink" milk you want, though I guess you've probably already worked that out
@ CHanuck - yes you can. It's called something like "soymilk" ( ), can't remember exactly, but it is generally stoked in most Migros with MM or more.
