N.Irish in Buochs

Hello everyone.

I'm Michelle, I am moving to Buochs in the next 3 weeks, Nick my husband from Blackpool, will be working in Pilatus soon. Seems a good company already, got my German lessons sorted! We have 2 children Eimile and Giorgia, 12 and 9, and we are looking forward to this opportunity in our lives. We have lived in Italy for the last 10 years, in Asti. Hoping to keep our house here after looking at what's left from Nick's wage.
Have seen and read all the remarks mentioned on this forum, it's always beneficial, yet should never daunt the on-goer.
We are arriving here poor as skunks (is there an expression?) Poor as shit maybe? I've always got these wrong at school sorry!
Anyway we are coming, looking forward to it, stayed in Beckenreid and they were so friendly so fingers crossed, after an amazing time here in Italy, it will be lovely there. Will obviously have to get a job but noticing there are no Irish bars in the vicinity, you never know!
Guten abend a tutti x

Re: N.Irish in Buochs

Welcome to the bunch and thanks for the nice intro!

My American flatland OH and I spent a few days in the Buochs area just recently; she absolutely loves Lake Lucerne. We even got a free demo by the Patrouille Suisse, the aerobatics team of the Swiss Airforce, over the airfield, actually a pure coincidence but pretty interesting. Oh, and we both got a sunburn on the car ferry from Beckenried to Gersau, but that has nothing to do with the area.

Glad you felt welcomed by the locals, but, while browsing the forum, you may have noticed that getting a foot in the door of the locals may be more difficult than with the much more approachable Italians. The Swiss are somewhat reserved mountain folks, and Central Switzerland is even Swisser in this respect than most other parts of the country.

Making friends may be harder than in Italy. It very much depends on your attitude, hence the problems often discussed on this forum. Having kids at school age may help a lot. Some EFers say a dog is even better... . Anyway, once you are friends with locals, you may rest assured that it will last through thick and thin.

I hope that your move goes smoothly and wish you all the best.

Welcome soon & good luck!

There used to be an Irish Pub in Kehrsiten near Stans but it closed last year. The nearest would be in Luzern, Gracie Kelly's near Schwanenplatz (I have no business interest), so maybe that's a bonus too.

The people from this neck of the woods are actually very nice. Klewenalp where you can get a direct cable car to from Beckenried is a great skiing resort because of the friendly local workers there (who are farmers in summer) & views. Also great for weekend walks.

Italy is not so far either & you can even see a motorway sign, 265km to Milan near Buochs. If you like outdoor activities/nature/trekking, near are; Altdorf, Bürgenstock, Buochs, Sarnen, Alpnachstad, Rigi, Emmetten, Seelisburg, Pilatus, Stanshorn, St Gotthard, Brünig & a little farther; Interlaken, Grindelwald, Schwyz Region.

Hi Michelle,

We're in your area (other side of Stans) - let me know if you get short of people to talk to, although that shouldn't happen in Buochs since that's where most of the Pilatus people seem to live.

Hope you enjoy the area!

Mika

Hi Mika!
You're not far away at all!
Did a tour of the area when we were looking for apartments!
We had a lovely 'aperitivo' in the centre there on one of the days...would love to meet up with you definitely, thanks for the reply!

Lovely. Just drop me a line when you're free. It's the school holidays now so we'll be away some of the time but I expect we can find something that matches both our schedules.

Re: N.Irish in Buochs

Nice to see folks from Northern Ireland in CH and on the forum, welcome.

I have done the opposite to you and, after 10 years here, have moved back to NI last year but am here for the Summer with the kids - my OH still works here so we are happily still connected to the place.. love being back, the weather is about to improve so I hope you have a lovely time of it. Enjoy!

Re: N.Irish in Buochs

Hi - I have been to Buochs a lot to visit my girlfriend's family. I think it is a very very beautiful place. You will have a great time, especially if you like outdoor activities. I also went skiing at klevenalp, which is great and it looked like it was also very good for families with children. Luzern is only a short drive/train ride away and is a lovely city.

Have fun!
