Better late then never ...

Hi everyone,

I am from Sydney, Australia and recently married a wonderful Swiss man and moved to Zurich. I've been here for almost 2 months already, but the settling-in period has been a bit of a challenge. But as my title implies, this introduction is better late than never.

My German language skills are basic at the moment, but I am hoping to improve on them significantly in order to broaden my job opportunities. On the topic of jobs if anyone is looking for a casual babysitter or dog walker I am available anytime! At the moment I can only take casual jobs, until September when I will hopefully secure a full time role.

A little bit about me ... I am 37 years old (just had a birthday 2 weeks ago) and back in Sydney I was an Executive Assistant for PricewaterhouseCoopers for the last 6 years and loved my job. In my spare time I love reading, swimming, cooking and hanging out with my family and friends. I am passionate about food and have been thoroughly enjoying checking out all the local farmers markets here in Zurich!

Thanks for reading
Nicole

Re: Better late then never ...

Welcome Nicole. I have been here for 4 years now and loving it. (I hail form South Africa.)

I must say, I have lived in a number of cities in the World and I think Zürich tops them all. A little expensive but well worth it in terms of position, functionality and of course a proper democratic society.

Hope you enjoy as much.

ciao

Hi Nicole,

Married a Swiss ??? ........ good idea at the time huh?

ha ha.... just jokes.

Anyway, welcome to the forum from another Aussie, and I hope you do settle in here nicely.

From a "hometown" perspective, it isn't that easy to settle in here within the first 6 months, so every time you find yourself a little bit frustrated.... take the time to sit back and laugh it off.

There are quite a few Aussies here, so just remember, you're not alone here.

Not to mention that most of the people on the EF are expats and have dealt with most of the situations you are about to find yourself in.

Make use of the search function at the top right hand corner to find out what you need, and start a thread for anything else you can't find.

When you apply for a job, don't ask if 120Kchf is enough
We don't know where the brown sugar is
and lost and stray Aussies can be found at the Oliver Twist pub in Niederdorf.

Best of luck

Welcome to the EF Nicole! I hope you find the forum as interesting and informative as I did when I first came across it. Most of your 1000,000's of questions about living in Switzerland (and even about marriage to Swiss men!) can be answered here. The Peeps here are Fab, honest!!

My husband is also Swiss, and I came here with only a basic knowledge of German - so we are in the same boat, kinda!! (except in different lakes!! )
You moved here at the right time of year as well, Switzerland in the Summer can be glorious! Have fun and enjoy your new 'Swiss-venture' !!

Angela

Re: Better late then never ...

My advice is to take the plunge and just do it! If you really love this guy then it will be worth it. Yes the language is hard, but it is achievable. If you want to open up your job opportunities then you must learn German, so it is definitely worth continuing with it. So far, apart from being homesick for family and friends, living in Zurich has been a really wonderful experience. I was here for 6 months last year while I was learning German and this time I will be looking for a job. The people are really friendly ... slightly reserved at first, but if you gently persevere then you will make some great friends. A few swiss people that I had begun to create friendships with last year have been so incredibly welcoming and kind since I arrived back here in May. Good luck!!

Switzerland is lovely, but you are right to be cautious. Coming witha "boyfriend" and coming with your "husband" are two different things. Especially as far as permits go. Come for a visit and see if you and your "soulmate" want to take it a step further so that you are more free to live and work here....
