Hello Oxon welcome to Basel and to the forum!
One of the hard parts for folks working for the pharmas here I think is learning the language - I HAVE to speak it / understand it a little in order to communicate with my mother-in-law (and my 3yo nephew speaks better than I

) but for folks who work in the big internationals, you speak English with your family at home, English spoken at work, so it is harder to force yourself (for many) to try to speak outside of a class room. So, good luck with it, it's not so bad, many of the local folk in Basel speak / understand English too (which is another thing that makes it tough for us) so you'll rarely be "stuck" unable to communicate at all.
The weather, ahhh... now that is a subject you can find many locals willing to discuss, not so different than elsewhere and it does provide somewhat of an icebreaker with getting into the language too. It IS wet this year and cooler than last year too, if I remember right there were restrictions in some areas on fireworks for Aug 1st celebrations last year due to dryness. So, hopefully you brought some sweaters with you, we've been up and down a few times temperature wise this "summer," I figure it's just that type of year.
Anyhow, welcome again and good luck with all the things that will help you getting settled in.
