Canada to Bern in Sept

Well I've been accepted at the University of Bern for my Master's program and jsut got the news a couple days ago. Quite excited! I guess I will be moving there next month but other then what I've read of the place I have no idea what to expect. I come from a rather small city so big cities are not that interesting to me but I've also never lived life in flats (all houses here).
I speak English, French, some Spanish and an other language but no German however I don't believe that will be too much of a problem after a few months.

Been reading these forums for months and I'm hoping to get some incites to what the city is like from those who have traveled/lived there.

Hi there Kngavl, welcome to the forum.

French is spoken widely in Bern, as you probably already know.

Congratulations on you acceptance! It will be lots of fun!

Hi! Welcome to the forum from a fellow Canadian. Bern is a beautiful city, I have been there several times and my future family-in-law is from there. It is smaller than Zurich or Geneva, but it is very nice and walkable for everything. The connections to the other cities and the mountains are great as well.

I hope you enjoy your program in Bern!

Julie

Hi!!

Welcome to the forum and dont hesitate if you have questions about Bern, I lived there for two and a half years before moving to Basel!

You can flatshare easily using this website: www.wg-zimmer.ch (the most famous flatsharing website in Switzerland). If you dont understand whats written on there, you can pm me and Ill send you a "translation" i made for an Irish guy. It worked well for him!

If big cities are not really what you are interested in, Bern definitely is a city for you. Its a very cute with a beautiful river and its surrounded by beautiful mountains!

We can also meet there once and I can show you around the city.

Im sure you'll enjoy your stay there!

Best,

Mary

Hi there

You can do lots of nice day trips from Bern! Interlaken and Thun are great and not far away. Definitely take the train and travel to the French part of Switzerland such as Montreux or Geneva. Zurich is close too! You should not get bored in Bern and there should be enough English speaking poeple too

Have fun!

Im also new at the forum and to Switzerland. Im going to do an internship at Bern from August to November! Im a lawyer by the way...

I also entered this forum to find new friends so I wont be so lost when I get there. I received interesting info. For example you should visit the following web page that shows you activities for foreign people living in Switzerland: http://www.glocals.com/

Spanish is my native tongue but i really want to practice my french so, if your interested maybe we could get together some day and practice french and spanish!!

Welcome to Bern Kngavl and also Sofia!

If you make it here by August 11 you should check out the Buskers Festival (http://www.buskersbern.ch/en). It's really lovely, lots of great music and interesting performances spread around the old town of Bern, for three nights. It's one of my favourite events here.
