Hello EF! From TX in Fribourg

Hello to EF,

My name is Jim and I have been lurking on the forum for many months. I have been living in Fribourg since January 2011. I am from Fort Worth, Texas.

Switzerland has been a great place for me to be - it feels so much like "home" more than anyplace I have ever lived. Unfortunately, my contract ends before the end of this year. Nevertheless, I intend to make the most of my time here. Of all the Swiss locals I know, most tell me that I've seen more of Switzerland than they have. I love the the culture, the differences from the US, and the natural beauty of this land.

I have never met (knowingly) anybody from EF, but if there's ever an opportunity to do so, and I'm not working, I'd really be interested in meeting other EFer's who also love living in Switzerland.

Fribourg has been a little rough for me, as I don't speak French. I'm a typical American who only speaks English. I do have a basic knowledge of German from 2 (failed) years that I took in high school about 100 years ago.

Mit freundlichen Grussen,
Jim

(by the way.. my forum name is what my niece calls me... when she was just learning to speak, she couldn't say "uncle Jim", and it always came out as "jungle Jim".)

Hi Jim, welcome to EF. You're lucky to have landed in what I think is the most beautiful city in all of CH. No plans to try to get a job and extend your stay ? What do you do ?

Re: Hello EF! From TX in Fribourg

Thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome! It is great to see so many TX folk here. It's surprising how many I run into around Switzerland. Is it because of that strange "green stuff", cool weather, and mountains that attract us here? I'm just glad I'm not back in DFW right now - those 100+ degree weeks are brutal.

Caleb, yes, I am seriously trying to extend my stay. I have communicated to my company my desire. It is up to them whether they can do anything internally to make that happen. In the mean time, I have started looking for jobs on my own. I don't want to let this unique opportunity (on the ground in Switzerland for face to face interviews) pass me by. I am in IT. Primarily infrastructure and operations - no programming or development.

Fribourg is very pretty. I already have my list of favorites - but in Switzerland I find it a bit of a a futile attempt to pick a favorite. It's like trying to quantify the difference between a 105 degree day and a 109 degree day! In the end, and from what I've seen so far, I think I could be happy working in just about and city in Switzerland and finding someplace nice to leave. Luzern has a special place in my heart (already several friends there), and Neuchatel is quite a nice place I like to go as well.

Tschüs!
