Re: New in Basel coming from USA

Hi Nick, welcome to EF. I GUESS you won't find as many Americans as Brits around here (we do have plently of Americans though). I think your second try was a bit better, and now that you have a bit of practice, a third post with a tad more info will be the charm.

Have fun !!!

Hey Bizz... Welcome to the forum, and to Basel... There are a "few" of "us" here... If you feel so inclined, there are a group of us meeting at EOIPSO ( Dornacherstrasse 192, 4053 Basel) tonight around 9ish, and then perhaps try our hand at Karaoke... :-) Don`t worry... you`ll find us...

I think it is because they filled their quota of Americans...same as the USA does it to us....go to the commune with your contract and push them (for sure take a German speaker with) and go and see whats up. CH is in my opinion the land where you really have to push things in order to get them done.

First of all welcome to the forum. And I agree, if you have a good there should be no reason to give you the permit. Like everywhere in the world this kind of regulations not always make sense, but i'm sure you will get through.

Good luck!

I am not sure about the specific regulations, but I seem to recall from my paper-processing days over a year ago that Switzerland also has a quota system, and it does matter whether you are EU or not (please double check with the Gemeinde - commune - and also your prospective employer who should be familiar with the regulations, and I am sure that other people in the forum can shed more light). As I understand it though, having a job is a requirement to obtain certain types of visas, but if the quota system is valid, just because you have a job doesn't mean you will automatically get a visa.

Visas and quotas, what a worldwide pain...when I was in the US and frantically waiting for news about my work visa approval (or denial) and so were a lot of my friends, I recall a very good friend of mine - multilingual, experienced professional with two masters degrees - being forced to turn down a stellar job offer because they had exceeded the visa quota, denied his application, and he wouldn't be able to be legally employed in the country. As I said, worldwide pain...good luck!
