From Chicago to Zurich

Hi Everyone!

I have been using this website for the past couple of weeks as I struggle to get oriented in Zurich! I am from Chicago, USA, and will be living in Zurich to finish a Masters in Neuroscience at the University of Zurich. While I miss watching baseball games and drinking cheap beer, Switzerland is a beautiful country, and I look forward to cycling when I can afford a bike.

If anyone would like to get together and chat, I would welcome meeting some new people. My German is passable, but is in use of much improvement. Thanks!

-Janie

Welcome to EF, Janie!

No doubt about it, Switzerland is a beautiful country!

You can learn everything about Cycling in Switzerland from ChrisW's excellent post. It has a section on renting a bike if you cannot afford to buy one!

Re: From Chicago to Zurich

While I'm not from the city, I lived in the North Chicago suburbs for a few years and love it. Zurich ain't too bad either though.

There's fairly regular meetups, I think, but I'm always game for a drink or such if I'm around (I live in Zug and work there, Paris, and Zurich). Can't speak for biking, but if you happen to play Ultimate Frisbee, there's a group of us that meets most Sundays in Zurich. Good way to meet people!

Oh, and same as in the States, now is definitely the time to buy a bike. Lot of sales going on since the season is ending.

Cheers!
Lance

Hi, Janie, welcome to the forum! I'm a Hoosier myself - but Chicagoans are the next best thing.

Is Neuroscience up here at Irchel or on the main campus?

Re: From Chicago to Zurich

Hi, Janie and Lance (and everyone else)--

I'm also on my way to CH (Zurich) from Chicago (but not until May; I'm writing this from Andersonville, where the wind chill is currently -20F).

But I'm *so* glad to hear there are ultimate players there! My boyfriend is moving with me and I don't know what he'd do without his frisbee fix. Now he can rest assured that even if he can't find a job, speak the language or find any other way to settle in, he can at least get some pickup in.

Re: From Chicago to Zurich

Nice to hear you're joining us. Janie and I lived in Logan Square and more recently Lincoln Square before moving here. Andersonville's a fantastic area. Sorry to hear it's cold though (it's been above freezing and mostly sunny here for the last couple weeks...there's apparently a southerly wind up from the Mediterranean that happens every so often).

We hope you'll stay in touch with us--and we hope that our 'experience' will help you navigate yours...we've made plenty of mistakes and have been plenty confused (and still are about some things) but we're still alive and, knock on wood, not broke yet.

It sounds like your boyfriend is doing what I did! Tell him not to worry, learning German comes quickly when it's a necessity...one quick word of advice in terms of finding a job: he should bring a copy of EVERY document ever that pertains to his career and education. Proofs of employment, diplomas, awards (even the smallest, dumbest ones) and so forth. It has been a pain trying to arrange for these things to be sent to me from the states.

Sure we'll meet when you make it over here. I'm not so much into UFO as I am into baseball, but there's lots of space for either one here. And the biking is fantastic.

All the best to you as you plan your move!
Ed

Re: From Chicago to Zurich

Been here for two years now, and I can say that it's not as hot in the summer or as cold in the winter. The volume of snow in some areas can be shocking (60 centimeters in 24 hours when I was in St. Gallen once!), but in general it's pretty mild here.

Have your boyfriend shoot me a message when y'all get out here. Our pickup games are usually around 5:00 on Sundays, followed by a couple of drinks afterwards. Good times. :-)

Re: From Chicago to Zurich

Hi Janie,

Welcome to Switzerland....and impending poverty lol !!!

Have just arrived in sunny Basel this week after been convinced (ok bribed) to leave St Louis (MO) for 6 months whilst the gf is completing a major contract.

Have visited the very nice folk at Bahnhof SBB (still unaware what SBB stands for) but I would suggest getting a 1/2 price train pass for 150 Fr and the monthly Bus/Tram pass for 35 Fr as I've spent the last couple of days generally wandering around on the spotless trams and buses...

Just a friendly voice in a world of German and adresses which would be fabulous scrabble scores !!

Ian
