New to CH - first in Horgen, then to Canton St. Gallen

Greetings! We have recently moved to CH from the Munich area...

We have been here a week although right now it feels like much more We are temporarily in Horgen while we wait for our house that we are buying to be finished being built - hopefully by the end of October.

My husband will be working in Horgen/Freienbach area (2 different sites) so we expanded our search to St. Gallen and fell in love with a house in the tiny town of St. Gallenkappel. Hubby is German, I am American and we have 3 kids. I know German (although not Schweizer deutsch) well enough and have lived in Germany for a total of about 7 years on 2 different occasions.

Right now I am just trying to figure out how to survive until we get into our house without spending all our savings on filling up the car! My 2 kiddos that are in the school system (2nd grade and 2nd kindergarten year) have between them 3 afternoons where they have to get back to school after the noon-2 lunch break...but, slowly I will figure it out. One mom has offered to take my kindergartener on both days she has afternoon school, and even offered to take my older one on Mondays as well (they both have afternoon sessions on Mondays).

Anyhow, a bit long winded there - but we are excited about this new life and hope it is one that will last a while (also a reason to buy a house, not as easy to pick up and move away again!). We love skiing and hiking (although the kids hinder the latter) so living here should be our Shangri-La. Let's hope so!

Looking forward to meeting you, if not in person, at least via the forum!

I also wanted to thank those who helped me out in my first posts/threads when we were considering this move - your advice was most useful!

Sounds like everything's going to plan and even better!

A bit off track, but if you want to get the tiny tots into hiking, try things like the music hiking trail in Toggenburg:

Loads of fun for kids. It's definitely not a challenging hike, but gets the kids used to being in the mountains. The views are lovely for you too.

Hello there,

We moved to Staefa last week with our two kids (one in second class in primary and one in first class in kindergarten) and I totally know what you mean about managing these lunchbreaks! I have some neighbours helping out too but my children are, of course, wanting mama to do it all! My husband is working from home tomorrow to help me as I've told him I can't be in two places at the one time!

I know we are not so close in terms of distance but if you wanted to meet up in say Rapperswil with the kids one afternoon then please let me know.

Best of luck!
Gillian
