Just landed in Basel!

Hello everyone!

Brilliant website and congratulations to the people who started the site and the administrators who keep it up. Full of good local knowledge and a great way for people to feel like they have a network to fall back on that we are missing from back home.

A bit about me... I'm a 29 years old British guy from Manchester, lived in Barcelona the last 4 years, with a 9 month stint in Dubai in the middle of that, so I have experienced the new culture/new language thing a few times so hopefully that will make this move easier!

I love sports... football (I'm a proud red, not a bitter blue!), tennis, golf, skiing. I love the beach (yeah, not gonna see much of that here I know!), cinema, photography, traveling but above all spending time with friends doing all of the above!

I am still considering whether to live in Basel or France, any advice would be really helpful! I already opened my bank account with UBS and they seem like a good bank. Plus the guy was really friendly so that always helps! I've got my annual SBB train pass from my new employers today so hopefully I'll get to see a fair bit of this amazing country! Any tips about days out, peoples favourite spots, experiences would be gladly welcomed too!

Hopefully I can get myself to one of these picnics in the park, or nights where people seem to get together to introduce myself but I'm a bit shy and could take some persuading to get there! Hahaha!

Well, that's all for now, but thanks again to everyone who contributes for all the amazing information!

Paul

Welcome to Basel and to the forum, Paul

I am sure there are a few threads about the pros/cons of living in Basel vs being a frontalier - but I think if you are single (and dont have kids) then you will probably pay more tax in France - plus have a longer commute if you work in town. So I personally would stay in Basel (or nearby Baselland)

Check out the social events - I believe JustRose is organising a pub crawl in a few weeks time, which would be a good way for you to meet a few ex-pats.

I agree with Foxinthesnow, Basel would be more convenient if you work in the city.

Welcome and hope to see you on the pub crawl on 24 September! (check the social events calendar)

Re: Just landed in Basel!

Welcome to Basel! It's a wonderful city.
As others have suggested, check out the social calendar for impromptu meetups.
Those I have met so far, have all been extremely pleasant and polite (as long as you can handle the humorous remarks from adrian! )
And should you fancy a beer, before the pubcrawl takes place, feel free to PM. I tend to enjoy a fair bit of beer on a weekly basis!

Thanks for your good wishes everyone... it's mainly at the weekends that I'll be around so would be good to meet up for a few drinks at the pub crawl!

Damit! Gonna miss the pub crawl I'm in London then Ireland from the 21-25 sept!

Welcome to the forum Paul have fun and feel free to ask for advice. I know it could be tempting for you to live in France especially with the exchange rate the way it is, however I personally think that the quality of life would be better in Basel. There is a lot more going on here than over the border especially for the expats

Hi Paul, welcome to Switzerland and the EF. Man U and golf - my 2 favourite things. All the very best mate from a Cheshire expat in Nidwalden.
