Looking for friends to hang out

Hi there,

I'm new in Zurich, well four months already, but found quite difficult to make friends. I guess it's because of the language, not everybody speaks English or wants to speak it... Anyway, I have friends but they're all workmates and most of them with girlfriends, boyfriends, wifes, etc, which makes it difficult to arrange meetings with them... I've got to a point in which I don't like weekends anymore and kind of prefer going to work (a bit sad isn't it ;-). I try to do stuff on my own, visit Switzerland (try to go somewhere every weekend), going out, going to the cinema, hiking, rollerblading, swimming in the lake, etc... but after a while I feel like doing that with friends, after all we're social beings by nature, aren't we ?

Anyway, in case there are people out there also looking for people to hang out, etc... My name is Fran, I'm 32, and I love going out or whatever that keeps me out of the house... and I'm not a weird or crazy person, like some of you might think it's the reason why I don't have friends outside the office :-P

Fran

Re: Looking for friends to hang out

Hey there, thanks for sharing. It can be hard but I suggest getting involved in some social activities.

www.couchsurfing.com have some great events around the country as do this website and you can meet people that you will become friends with.

I have also noticed that here you need to be a little forcefull. Get involved with conversations that are happening in your perhiphery, jump in, be the social tiger.

Perhaps join a sports club?

Okay enough of the waffle, if I were in Zurich I would offer to meet up for a beer but Basel is a slog.

Best of luck.

Come to The Final Rappi Bier Ploughmans of 2011.
There should be quite a few people from Zurich, including me.

Re: Looking for friends to hang out

I've been in Zurich for a couple of months and have found the EF events a great way of meeting new people. Everyone has been really friendly and although I do intent to learn the language, it's always nice to switch off and speak English guilt free! Just sign up for a few things and see what happens

Hi, Fran-

I am new here also (been here 2 weeks). Currently looking for full time work. Would love to have someone to hang out with!! I live right outside of Zurich but have a part time job in the city.

Send me a note if you want to hang out!

Cheers!

Re: Looking for friends to hang out

I can't PM anyone yet, but I'm interested in meeting some people. I just arrived in Zurich last week from San Diego. I'm 24 and a new PhD student at ETH/UZH. If you want to do something this weekend, shoot me an email:

Re: Looking for friends to hang out

Hi Fran,

I too am new to Zurich, 3 weeks. I moved from NJ to teach English in an international school. I'm living with my cousin right outside of Zurich. Have you started German classes yet? I just started last week at the Migros in Weidikon. My sister just told me about this site and I am definitely going to use it to get involved in the social events.

Kim
