Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy,

if you plan to learn German I would recommend you to learn the proper one :-) Once you get that understanding Swiss German comes (almost) for free. Speaking Swiss German it's a complicated task tough. It might take some years until you get all the pronunciation right. If you want to start learning German already I strongly recommend you the method of Michel Thomas. It's available as audio lessons and I find it very instructive. Once you're here you could register for the German courses that unizh is offering.

Hope this helps!
Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian

redEagle - So what do you do if you can't find somewhere to live? Where do people stay while looking for accommodation?

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi all,

I have just moved to Zurich from the UK to start post-grad studies at the ETH. If anyone would like to go for drinks and socialise at any time I'd love to hear from you! I enjoy drinks, cinema, sport and hiking etc so pretty game for anything!

I managed to find accommodation through the ETH marktplatz (as has been mentioned), which seemed quite a good place. Also, I had some offers by asking the departmental secretary to email around for any leads - you may want to try that approach if you are still looking.

Hope to see you soon! Cheers J

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hey guys/girls,

I am a British postgrad just arrived in Zurich this week from the UK to work in research for 9 months. What a difference it is here to the UK. I found this forum only this morning.

In my flat-searching when I got here I have a bunch of contacts left over which I don't need now I have a flat sorted, I would gladly hand over all my information to anyone who needs it

I haven't met any students like myself yet, I start on Monday, and I would like to meet new people around my age (22) in and around Zurich. I would definitely be up for going for drinks etc. Hopefully continue some of the student social scene that I left over the summer in my last university!

Dave

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy,

Sure, I'll have a snoop around for you. One person I know may have a room free for December if you can't find anything, and I am aware of another room free Jan-June. I'll see what the deal is when I start next week! Househunting does seem to be an absolute nightmare here, for sure.

Are you in the UK at the moment, or planning on coming over to try and find something?

Cheers, James

Re: Student moving to Zurich

It's nice of you to help each other, but please remember that this is not the 'Adverts for Property' section of the Forum. If you have general ideas and links which are not already in the relevant Thread, please add your information there so that it is also available for those who have been searching much longer. If you have a specific object for rent which you want to inform a specific member about, please give the information by PM. Otherwise, the Ad goes in to the Adverts for Property

Thank you all.

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi James,

That would be great thanks! I'll PM you as Longbyt says.

I do also have an advert for property wanted in the adverts for property section.
Thanks,
Lucy
