Student moving to Zurich

Hello,

I'm an English postgrad student moving to Zurich in November for research. I don't speak any German or Swiss German (although I would like to learn) so it would be nice to meet some English speaking students etc. I only found out found out I was moving last week so I still need to find somewhere to live Tips most welcome!

Thanks

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy,

I'm also a student, about to start my first semester here. I arrived a little more than a week ago, and I have been struggling to find a place to live. Fortunately, my professor has a spare room that he is letting me stay in until I can find more permanent housing. It may be hard to find a place to live if you're not already in the city. Even being here, it is very difficult. I'm going to look on my own for another week and if I don't succeed, I'm going to go through an agency. mata-dienst is supposed to be pretty good.

Let me know when you arrive, we can meet up and grab a drink!

Kyle

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Ashley - that would be nice I shall let you know when I get there. And thanks

Hi Kyle,

I am getting a little worried about accommodation even though I have two months to go and I have only just started looking. I have a limited budget and I am slightly restricted on region as I have to travel between accommodation, a research project and UZH without it taking too much time out of my day. I am also limited by the fact I only speak English and I'm currently in the UK This is the point where I wish I knew more people in Zurich as its sometimes easier to find places with a group of people. I would be quite happy with a tiny little room though as I will travel light from the UK.

Thanks for the name of the agency. Let me know how your search goes. I will let you know when I arrive.
Lucy

Hi Ashley
Hi Lucy
Hi Kyle

I m also a Student and going to start my study in September (13th) in the ZHAW in Winterthur, I m new to this area but not new to Switzerland. yeahh,,it s hard to find an acomodation in Zürich (in general), it s expensive also. Recently I found a room in Flat in the "Campus" of the School, but the contract is only for six months, so I have to look for something else after that.

But it s good idea to meet you one day and talk about several topics and I could help you also with German if you want

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy and everyone,

I'm not a student anymore but I am moving to Zurich by the end of the week and would love to meet new people. I'm still feeding my coffee addiction from my student days (although, I have a feeling that over-priced Swiss coffee might put a stop to that!) so drop me a message if anyone's interested.

Mae

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy,

There are always some WG advertisement on the notice board ETH, I can look up today for you whethear there is some offer in the private sharing apartment.

What kind of appartment do you prefer? A studio (one room apartment) or sharing apartment with other student?

And how much is your budget?

Cheers,

Lee

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lee,

That would be great - thanks!

I'm looking for a WG with other students from any time in November or the very beginning of December until end of February/march or until the summer. It should ideally be an English speaking household, as I don't speak German (yet). My budget is quite limited. At the moment, I'm searching under 600CHF, but not sure how realistic this is? Also must be furnished and ideally near UZH Irchel or north/east/towards Winterthur

At the moment, I'm thinking all this is a little impossible - especially as I'm in the UK..

Thanks,
Lucy

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Lucy,

I'm a new post-grad student as well in Zurich.

Regarding accommodations, have you tried sending an email to the University housing representatives if they have any extra rooms for you? I got a good deal under CHF600 a month from them.

Do PM me if you wanna catch up for some drinks

Anna

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi Anna,

Thanks for the tip. I am not sure if they will help me though as, although my research is based at UZH, I am enrolled at a University in the UK (its complicated) - but I will enquire.

Anna and Nunu - It would be nice to meet you all once I am there, but I get there in November

Re: Student moving to Zurich

Hi,

That would be great (when I get there). I really need to try and learn some German. Are you finding it at all difficult learning German whilst a lot of the language around you is Swiss German? or are you learning Swiss German?

Lucy
