Re: Hi, Everybody!

Hi Roberta,

I'd love to meet you for a chat, I'm pretty much in the same situation as you are, only I've been living here since june. I still haven't found a job here, so I'm free most of the time and it feels a bit lonely. Let me know if you're interested, we can plan something together ;-)

Best wishes,

Helena

Re: Hi, Everybody!

Hello
If I can help either of you in any way, please let me know.
I've been living in Switzerland for a good few years now, speak the language and know how most things work.
If you send me a personal message, I'll give you my phone number and we can have a chat.
Just don't sit feeling lonely when talking things over with someone who has been through most things can often be all that's needed.

Re: Hi, Everybody!

Hi ceppych,

thanks for your kind reply, I appreciate it.
My situation is following: yes, I'd like to meet new people here, especially those who are -like me- looking for a job here. I have plenty of time mornings and afternoons when all people I know are at work.
But what I'd really, *really* love to is to find a job finally, somewhere here (Vaud/Geneva region), that's it. What kind of job? Ideally in my area of specialization (molecular biology) or at least something temporary (cleaning, farm work.. I'm not picky, but I don't speak much french and with my work history in research, it's obvious that such work would not satisfy me and I'd quit as soon as I found something better).

I expected it to be difficult, but I have been trying some 4 months and I'm getting more and more desperate. I'm new to this forum, perhaps there are a lot of people like me, I should search the posts and see if I can find some tips; I know it's good manners to try to help oneself first before asking others for help.
However, if you're still interested, I'd be happy to meet you. Just let me know.

Re: Hi, Everybody!

I'm not too hot on molecular biology.
I feel sure someone on the EF will give you more help than I can with finding a job in that particular field.
I could give you some help with more mundane 'stuff of life' affairs and just send me a personal message with your phone number or your email address and I'll get in touch.
Bit busy for the next week with visitors from London, but after that I'll have any time you need.

Re: Hi, Everybody!

ceppych, I'd like to keep the discussion on this topic open so that anyone could join (although "hi everyone" is not a very informative title for this thread). this might be useful for more people than just me.

as to your advice: after doing some research on the other EF members' experience with job search, it seems that all I have to do is to be persistent and patient. there are not many topics dealing with finding post-doc or scientific positions, but accordings to the experience of those gyus (PhD in Food Science), half a year of sending CVs to every possible place is nothing extraordinary. and it seems it depends more on one's connections and good luck than on knowledge.

for anyone who finds this thread, there seem to be regular meetings of "job enthusiasts" over a cup of coffee, organized via the glocals site (http://www.glocals.com/#/things-to-do/lausanne/), I'll give it a try tomorrow. perhaps we can organize more activities to get us job-searchers together via this forum? low-cost and within working hours? some sport or language exchange, perhaps? and exchanging our tips and experience can only be helpful

Re: Hi, Everybody!

Hi Helena,

You probably have already done this, but you should look at the EPFL posts for technicians (if that's the kind of thing you're looking for). My institute just hired one a few months ago. Also, you can file one with human resources there and at UNIL. Sorry if this is old news. Wish you the best with finding a job!

Suliana

Re: Hi, Everybody!

Hello,

thanks for the tips, contacting the HR departments of Unil/EPFL/CHUV/... might help
As for the technician positions, I applied for several of them and each time I was told I was overqualified and I should wait for postdoc openings instead.

btw, Suliana, in what area do you work? just being curious..

Helena
