Marriage brings me to Switzerland

GrŁezi EnglishForum!!

As the title says, I am coming to your great country to marry my little sweetheart, Pia. Long story short, we met each other in Thailand (2009) during our travels after each of us "lost" our jobs. She came into the hostel with a huge bag, and I asked if she needed help taking it up the stairs. Ever since that moment, we have been together and plan to marry in October (2011) and in the process, destroy the mantra of "nice guys finish last".

I wanted to introduce myself before posting and using this wonderful website. You will find me around more and more now; since moving to Switzerland at the end of September. I will have many questions, and hopefully will find many answers on here; but don't worry, I know how to use the SEARCH function :P

A little about myself. I am 27 years old from the US, but was born in Bolivia. Adopted to great parents at age 4 and grew up in Michigan. Studied engineering in university and love mathematics, running, cooking, biking, hiking, and of course traveling. I worked in aerospace after university before being laid off. And my last job was waiting tables at a fancy little bistro outside Chicago, IL. All in a days work :-)

I am excited for this new adventure, life style, and change of scenery. I will be moving to the Zurich area, and will be a local soon enough. Will learn the Swiss-German language, customs, and taste the cheeses and wines (and fondue).

If you have any questions or want to know me better, just ask, I am open and happy to introduce myself to this great community and country. One last note, I traveled to Switzerland in April for one month to visit Pia, so have a little taste of the flavor of Switzerland. I understand living here will be a bigger challenge (and even greater reward) than I can imagine!

Thank you in advance for any advice, kind words, or congratulations.

Merci,
Nathan Henry

P.S. I am the guy in the pic, Pia is the girl. :-)

Re: Marriage brings me to Switzerland

Neat intro Nate and welcome to the forum / Switzerland. Your post oozes soooooo much positivity and hope.

Also, many congrats on your forthcoming nuptials and future married life together here. Undergoing two major life changing experiences in close proximity - moving countries and getting married - must be pretty daunting and exciting in equal measure for you right now.

It's good you want to learn German / Swiss-German. That will really help with your settling in and getting used to being here much faster.

I bet you're really going to enjoy exploring Switzerland and the beautiful mountains, landscapes, forests, lakes etc.

Finally, I gotta hand it to you for being able and willing to use the search function. It's an increasingly rare skill, or so it seems at times!

Have fun and *see* you around.

Nathan, with your attitude, moving here will be a breeze. Make sure you check out the social calendar on the forum for things to do.

Re: Marriage brings me to Switzerland

Thank you everyone for the welcoming.

I took a look around before joining the website and saw that most people don't utilize the knowledge already contained on the website, but instead just ask randomly. I don't want to be that person.

And hopefully my writing doesn't degrade over time; I think more people need to take personal pride in writing, it is a lost art.

@musings: Thank you for the link, I read through all the comments. Some I don't understand, but others such as the meat prices have already been discovered. I have been thinking about this for months about how I can continue my love of meat. Compromise, compromise, compromise!

I look forward to many more discussions with fellow EF users.

On the wings of a bird, I will take off and allow myself to drop into the city.

Sorry, maybe not most, but "some" people. I think overall, this is a great community, otherwise I would not have joined. Just clarification.

Re: Marriage brings me to Switzerland

Welcome to the forum.

Although I'm technically only a newbie to the forum myself, I had been around for a little bit before too.

I have a similar story. Married a swiss girl, and moved here directly after our marriage. Although after spending some time here, we then went back to Australia to complete studies, but are back again now. And doing my best to learn the local language... haha.

As others have also said, I look forward to talking to you around the forum. I like your positive attitude. It's needed in here to know when not to take people too seriously.

Anyway, all the best with your move, settling in, and your marriage! It's an awesome adventure!

Re: Marriage brings me to Switzerland

Hi Nathan and welcome! Hope you will have a great time here and enjoy the journey (after a few months, you'll become an avid follower of threads like why is brown sugar so expensive and what happened to my meat variety) Kidding.
I went to Michigan for my undergrad and lived in Chicago for 6 years after UoM, lovely city. Happy to have another Chicago newbie here! All the best, Q
P.S. and best of wishes for the wedding!

Re: Marriage brings me to Switzerland

Thank you again everyone! This is a most welcoming community, probably the best one I have joined thus far. I have been reading through some of the posts; especially about what to bring from the States. One question I have, "what is it with the brown sugar?" Do people really use it that much? I understand it is a joke on the EF, but it must have originated from a serious question.

@Dougal's Breakfast, sorry for taking so long to respond. I had to ask Pia about her hometown, and yes, she is from Uznach. How did you know? Was it something about her face? Or just a lucky guess? She was surprised and so was I; since it is outside of canton Zurich.

My bags are packed and I'm ready to go...Just kidding, I won't start singing. But yes, count down has begun, T-3days. And I very much like the social calendar. i was bummed out cause I missed the beer tasting at the Rapperswil castle. Hopefully we can find other castle-beer combos. Castles are a favorite and I am counting on EF to keep me informed. And don't worry, once I get accustomed, I will begin to add information on here. I am a taker and a giver.

Cheers,
Nate

I recognised her! She's a good friend of someone I used to work with (Karin W. - she'll recognise the name), and we met from time to time.

I'm delighted to hear your good news. I wish you both all the very best for the future.
