Moving to Zurich...

Hi all,

I'm moving to Zurich in January! I thought I'd drop by to introduce myself in advance of my arrival. I'm a mid-thirties woman from the US. I love cooking and biking and coffee and beer...

I've been lurking for the past few weeks while interviewing and making my decision about my new job. There's so much great information here and you all seem like a great community.

Right now, I'm just beginning to work through renting a place from afar on my own with a limited budget. Wish me luck, cause it seems like I'm going to need it.

I'm really looking forward to living in Switzerland, and perhaps meeting some of you.

Re: Moving to Zurich...

Welcome to the forum..those are my interests as well, although I would reverse the order of coffee and beer (and add wine in front). You have quite an adventure in front of you, though your timing is a bit off, you will arrive just as the good weather ends. Hope you ski!

Thanks! I do like wine too, but I didn't want to overload my list with alcohol. And I think now is a great time to learn how to ski.

Re: Moving to Zurich...

Mid thirties, love..... beer.
I've found everyone here (by here I mean Zurich... not just EF) to be very welcoming and friendly, and helpful.
I managed to rent a place from afar, but only the UK so I did go to see it before I got it.
I found it through the university marketplace (http://www.marktplatz.uzh.ch/wohnungen/) as most apartments on homegate (http://www.homegate.ch/rent/real-estate-search) were going before I could even apply. Don't worry, it can be done, and you can rent a furnished serviced apartment to look from here if you can't face the idea of renting an unseen place from the US.
Bring brown sugar and maybe we can meet for a beer

Re: Moving to Zurich...

Nice to see that so many other folks like beer too. I'm looking forward to trying out Switzerland's options.

I *am* a little terrified of renting a place unseen. Thanks for the university marketplace link -- it looks like I might be able to find a temporary sublet there while looking for a real place. I'll bring some brown sugar, and let's do meet for a beer once I arrive!

I'm moving from Philadelphia, but I know Portland well enough to find the TV show Portlandia funny.

Re: Moving to Zurich...

Welcome.. I would suggest if you can delay the shipping, get over here and find some furnished/temperaroy accommodation for a few months to get your feet under the table first. Getting somewhere to live is a minefield and very difficult if you are not on the ground.

Weather should be no stranger to you coming from Philly but forget about chessy steak.. that is going to break the bank!

Will see you when you here!

Re: Moving to Zurich...

Welcome to the EF and Switzerland.

When choosing a place to live taxes can vary considerabley
from town to town.

Do you know which part of town where you will work?
