Sorry for the late intro - have been meaning to do it for a while!

I am a 41 year old mother of a 1 1/2 year old daughter. I come from Yorkshire in England. I have been in Zurich since January last year and lurking on the forum since before then.

I am in Switzerland as my British partner works for a Swiss company. I came here to join him whilst on my maternity leave and liked it so much I did not leave.

We are in Switzerland for the foreseeable future and I am learning German and wondering if I can ever pick up Swiss German before my daughter learns too many more words. It is a tad embarassing when you don't realise some of the 'nonsense' words your child is speaking are actually real words in another language

If anyone lives in or near Zurich Affoltern, please get in touch. I am hosting a coffee afternoon on Monday and would love to meet more people.

Can you be more specific so that we know if you're friend or enemy?

Unfortunately I come from the less than picturesque West Yorkshire. In the past I would say Dewsbury and no one would have a clue where I meant and have to say somewhere in the middle of Huddersfield, Bradford and Leeds. Now it is infamous for more than one reason!

Does that make me friend or foe? I thought the only rivalry was with that odd lot over the Pennines?

Dewsbury is near Mirfield, if that's any help to people.

I did wonder Mirfield if you were named after the place I have relatives that for some reason prefer living there to Dewsbury

I come from Holmfirth which is over the other side of Huddersfield and a bit more picturesque.
We used to go for a day out shopping to Dewsbry when I was a kid. My mum and gran seemed to think it was better than Huddersfield for some reason.

I'm sure all these places pale in comparison with beautiful Sheffield

In particular, nothing quite like a Saterday night going out in Sheffield!

It is hard to believe now with the state the market is in now but they used to run day trips by coach to Dewsbury Market. It had one of the best indoor markets in the country! I miss Crosses' boiled ham, belly pork and roast pork. The sweet stall does Poor Bens and Yorkshire mixture. It was a sad day when Dempster Listers closed down - they had the best teacakes in the town. Ah well I am heading back at Christmas so can head for fish and chips with bits

Yorkshire mixtures and fish and chips with bits on, you're making me feel really homesick now. Never really liked poor Bens although my Gran always bought some.

I remember the coach trips too. I seem to recall that the market was the main attraction for us too. They ruined Huddersfield apparently when the pulled down the old market and built the concrete monstosity that is there today.

My dad's Co. Durham, they (my parents) now live in N. Yorkshire on the border with Cleveland and I was schooled in N. Yorkshire... where else?
