New in Bern!

Hello, everyone!

I just moved from the Netherlands to Switzerland for work 5 weeks ago and will be here for one year. I have never been in a foreign country for an extended period like this, so I'm still adjusting to a new lifestyle and a new job. I haven't had much time (or any idea how to go about doing it..) to make friends or meet people my age (28), and now I'm starting to feel a bit lonely. So I'm just looking to meet people and overcome my (starting) homesickness.

So if you are living in Bern and in sort of the same situation (or not), please let me know and let's meet!

Re: New in Bern!

Welcome Maartje, keep an eye on the social events calendar.

I find the Bern members very shy and don't go out very much! Why not start your own function and have a regular Saturday coffee morning or similar?

Re: New in Bern!

Hi Maarjte and Emma G
I too have recently moved from London UK to Bern for work purposes.
I am 27 and would like to meet other expats too.
Maybe we can take Ittigen's advice and start our own social events as I have been checking the EF calender and it seems pretty bare when it comes to Bern activity.

PM me if you all are interested
Take care

Re: New in Bern!

Hey All,
I'm 25 and moved here 3 weeks ago from London with my girlfriend who is Swiss. I would love to meet some other young people in Bern. I work from home so have not really got to know anyone yet..

Is anyone free to meet up this weekend or some time next week? I'm keen for coffee/beer/movie/anything!

I would send all of you a pm, but apparently you can't send a group pm.

Cheers
Patrick

Re: New in Bern!

New in Bern as well!

Hi everyone, I'm 27 and I'm staying in this city for 2 months (I work at one of the embassies). Since I don't know almost nobody here, it would be nice to find some company. Don't you think?

So if there is someone who would like to have a chat, have a beer or need some company to wander at the surrounding hills - I'm ready!

And one more thing - is there maybe some crew playing football in Bern at this forum? If you play I would be delighted to join you!

Learning through speaking is fun!

-----------------------------------

The Keynote Speaker: Gabriella Müller-Mendoza

Workshop 1: John Styffe: Biofeedback for Anxiety Control

Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear or persistent phobia which occurs through the stress of performing to an audience. There are many suggestions and tips offering quick fixes, but most tend to be superficial and do not get to the root causes. In this workshop you will learn why you respond the way you do and how you can change this response.

John Styffe became interested in Toastmasters in 1978 because of stage fright and joined in Switzerland in 1993. When he "fully committed" to it, he started to make progress dealing with anxieties. He learned to present his thoughts and training to groups of people in an authentic, calm and professional manner. Today John gives presentations and leads corporate workshops in addition to coaching individuals.

Workshop 2: Andy Habermacher: The Fox Factor – how speakers can hijack the unconscious mind, for better or worse!

Andy will show us how the unconscious mind will be sidetracked and fooled by a speaker takig advantages of various subconscoius processes. You will learn how percieved status operates, how the mind (mis)balances information, and how the audience influences each other.
This is a journey into the unconscious mind, and it can help you avoid pitfalls and benefit from insights whether speaking or listening.

Andy studies how neuroscience influences decision-making and behaviour. He focuses on practical implications of brain science and uses them to coach leaders and executives. Andy is the CEO of corporate training programmes, a company based in Zurich, and his work takes him all over the world. His recent book “The Fox Factor” explains how status and other personal influences can lead to distorted thinking. Andy is a professional speaker and speaks about the brain and business in a variety of contexts.
