| | New in Fribourg
Hi!
I just moved to Fribourg from Stockholm. I don’t know anybody here and I have just started to familiarize myself with the area so it is all very new and exciting.
I’m 33, Swedish, GF, no kids.
I am very much into sports: mountain biking, kite surfing (are there any good spots around Fribourg?), football, floorball, bouldering/climbing, tennis, squash, skiing… If anyone knows of any organized events or just wants to meet up for a ride or a game please let me know!
Is there pub or restaurant in Fribourg where expats and other English speakers meet up?
/Michael

Hi Michael, welcome to EF and to Fribourg.
Being so close to the pre-alps, there are plenty of decent MTBing routes very close, as well as rock climbing probably. Kite surfing I'm not so sure about tbh. Also some great hiking trails, rivers and lakes to enjoy, and skiing of course.
There's usually plenty of English-speakers to be found in Paddy Reilly's pub in Grand Places (wait, I've heard this before somewhere...).

Hello Michael
I once had a nights stay on the Af Chapman, many years ago (before moving on to stay with friends) - is it still afloat?
Water activities in this region, tend to be centred around Lake Murten and Lake Neuchatel .... 30-45 mins drive from Fribourg. The latter, I recall has a dedicated area (only during certain times) at Portalban.
Here's a link to their site (in French): http://www.swisskite.ch/
Further down the lake at Yvonand also: http://www.kitesurferassociation.ch/...d=70&Itemid=78 |

Thank you all!
TiMow: Yes, Af Chapman is still there. I have never been there though. Nice location.
FMX: Was that Swedish? In that case you did manage to get one Swedish word in there (till=to)
The links were very useful. Now I just have to find someone with similar interests.
I will definitely check out Paddy Reilly's

Hello and welcome to another foreign body to Fribourg. This area is becoming quite popular for expats. Hope you're enjoying finding out about the city/canton/area. There's lots of different things to do and you can find out more about them from the tourist office in Fribourg next door to the station.

I am arriving over from Ireland to start my new job on the 14th November
I hope the Irish bar in the town will be showing the Irish football teams play off matches! |

Hi Michael,
I live in Fribourg and have done for the last 8-9 months. Still getting to grips with it myself. I'm a big mountain biker and snowboarder and go whenever I can at weekends although with so much other stuff to do, it can be hard to find the time.
I ride DH a lot in Chatel, Champery, Rochers de Naye, Morgins etc. and also a fair bit of enduro. Last ride was around Verbier and the 2000m Brazilian trail. We like to ride steep and technical trails, preferably out in the wilderness, exploring the hiking trails as these tends to be the most challenging and you never quite know what you're going to get :-)
There is some great riding very close to Fribourg. We go to Plaffeien a lot which has a small "bike park". If this sounds like your kind of riding level then you should tag along one time.
As for Kitesurfing, there is probably some daft rule against it on the lakes, but I hope not. I know people do it on Lake Constance on the German border. I'm from an Island in the UK so am well into watersports. Hoping to hire a boat and do some wakeboarding next summer.
There is an excellent climbing centre in Givisiez where I went bouldering for the first time the other day at lunch. My arms are now dead!
Cheers,
Tim

Hej Michael, hur ar det?
Ok... my poor attempt at Swedish. Anyway, I just moved out of Sweden in March (Back to the US). I was in Gavle for 3 yrs. Now living in Fribourg until Christmas or February. (here together with my wife)
I travel quite a lot, so not always around... but typically always ready to meet up for a drink or two.

| | Kite Surfing ?
Ive never done it - But there is usually lots of Kite surfers on Lake Biel when the wind is up.
Im in La Neuveville (CH-2520) and if you head to St Joue (Just outside of La Neuveville) there is a playing field and also a "special" area just for kite surfers...
Hope this helps..

Thanks all!
MTBTim: Sounds exactly like the type of riding that I like. I definitely prefer single tracks but so far the “trails” I’ve ridden here have been mostly dirt road. I would very much like to tag along. I’m fairly certain my technical abilities are up to standards but my cardio is still getting used to the Swiss uphill climbs…
Please let me know when you next plan to go on a ride. I have a car with a bike rack so I’m fairly flexible.
Also, great tip on the Givisiez bouldering place. So far I’ve been going to a place near Bern, but this is much closer and seems more focused on bouldering.
flytoolow: Thanks, I definitely check out the spots you mentioned. Do you know (roughly) how many times a month the wind is strong enough for people to ride?
zoolander428: Just PM me if like to go for a beer.
/Michael

Hi Michael.
The climbing place is here: http://www.grimper.ch/
There is also one nearer the centre of fribourg somewhere I have heard but not sure.
Don't worry about the cardio thing, I much prefer the helping hand of a cable car, train or ski lift If your technical ability is ok, thats good as the nice trails here are rocky, steep and often with high risk exposure
I'll reply to your message soon with more details.

Hi and welcome. You are in for some fun with the great outdoors near Fribourg, in all seasons. Are you a skiier or snowboarder?
Quite a few of us are meeting in Fribourg very soon- so you'll soon make friends.

Odile: What is this meet your are writing about?
I do skiing, snowboarding and a little telemark skiing. It goes in cycles what I most prefer. Right now it is probably skiing.
