I have just moved to Neuchatel!

Hello everyone,

I have just moved to Neuchatel from England and would love to meet some more people here. I am studying French at the university here.

Also, I am broke so would love to find a job! I have a lot of work experience, so I don't know if anyone has any suggestions for part-time work? I have sales, retail and management experience!

Anyway, I don't expect to find a job straight away, but would really appreciate meeting some English-speaking people! Please get in touch

Georgina

Hi Georgina

I hope you enjoy your time in Neuchatel.

Regarding jobs, speaking as a parent of young children, there is always a real need for babysitters .. either on a regular basis or just to be on call for evenings out. Pay for someone of your age would be around 20Chf an hour, so it would be worth your while I think (especially if the children are small and in bed quite early!). And you might see if there is any interest to help school children with English - around here I have seen adverts on our Gemeinde notice board for help with English homework etc.

Have fun!

Hi there!

Thank you, that's a great idea, I think I will put up a few notices in supermarkets for help with english work/ translations.

Really liking Neuchatel thanks! Feels a bit crazy at first but I'm sure I will settle down !

Hey Georgina, welcome to Switzerland.

There's a meet up on 12th November for the EF members in Neuchâtel - there are loads of English speakers about the town. I don't live there, but it's a place I visit often.

Anyway, hope you're settling in nicely - it's a beautiful looking town.

Here's the link to the meet up the 12th...

Neuchâtel dinner/drinks/random event

See you round!

Yasmina

I like it a lot, it's a nice compromise between small and big and has a lot going on for a town of 30,000 inhabitants. Good for cinema and theatre (assuming you speak French), not so good for any kind of live music, excellent for outdoor stuff, be it skiing, hiking or water sports.

It can get gloomy at this time of the year (you will have noticed the fog over the last few days, it's a regular feature), but you only need to get up into the hills to be above it.

Re: I have just moved to Neuchatel!

Hi,

I am wondering if you could maybe recommend any website about this town? I went on the train to Geneva this weekend and Neuchatel was on of the stops. It looked lovely from the train although you can't see much from there and I said to my husband that on our way back we should stop by and visit this town also but we had Geneva and Lausanne on our list for the weekend so there was not enough time and after non-stop walking I was exhausted to do more.

Is it really that nice as it looked from above? It seems small but very interesting place to see and full of stunning architecture.

Hi Georgina, welcome to Neuchatel! You're right, it is a lovely little city, I hope you get settled in well. If you'd like to meet up some day for a tea or a walk by the lake, send me a PM, my schedule is fairly open especially during work days.

Oh, and there is also a women's walking group around Neuchatel that I think will be meeting again potentially on thursday mornings in the weeks to come.
You can search that thread too.

What brings you here?

This is the local tourist office's website, as a starting point.

The old town isn't very big but it's certainly pretty. The Collégiale (the old church next to the castle which you can see from the train) is currently covered in scaffolding, so it may be worth waiting a bit before visiting. The lakeside is very nice as well; different from Zug as well in the sense that it's a much bigger lake, which gives a different feel to the lakeside walk. You could certainly spend a pleasant half day looking round.

Welcome to Neuchatel. It's a lovely town and I'm sure you'll soon feel at home here.

Cafe du Cerf may be looking for bar staff. You could always ask them.

Re: I have just moved to Neuchatel!

Hi and welcome to Neuchatel, my home town. Lots of new arrivals recently- hope you can make it to the meal/meet in a couple of weeks time. Won't be there as I'll be looking after my grand-children and visiting friends (Surrey and East Leics). Where are you from btw?

Another lovely day up here in the mountains above your head. On my return from UK will organise a shopping day in nearby Pontarlier (France).
In the winter will organise some cross country skiing outings if you are interested, and StephenNeuchatel promised to organise a snow shoeing outing or two. Enjoy.
