Young family moving to Lausanne

I maybe moving to Lausanne Jan / Feb time. I have a new job with a company based currently in Neuchatel but moving to Lausanne in June next year. At first I will come over by myself and live in company accomodation until I can find somewhere in Lausanne.

Neither of us speak any French, I speak a tiny german. My wife is worried she will be lonely and just stuck inside with our children (3 boys, 1 2 year old and 3 month old twins) all day and never make any friends. Please someone make friends with her Are there any other people in a similar situation or who have made a move like this and can give advice. How did you go about meeting new people? Are there playgroups and the like she could take the children to and meet other people?

Re: Young family moving to Lausanne

welcome to the forum and to Switzerland

Lausanne is quite a lively place with loads of activities for every one. The lake shore is simply fantastic with so many parks, places for BBQ etc. In addition, thanks to EPFL, UNIL , IMD and other international setups; you will find large number of expats.

The port at Ouchy, and the surrounding parks are excellent for kids.

Also housing is comparatively easier to find, and reasonably priced. I am sure you and your family will be able to settle quickly.

good luck

Welcome. I am sure you and your family will be just fine.

We have been here for 7 months, we have a toddler and a baby on the way. My French isn't good and my husband's French is rubbish. But we have managed to survive so far and met some very nice people.

Your wife can message me if she has any questions, i would be happy to help.

Re: Young family moving to Lausanne

I live near near morges also have 3 boys dont speak any french after 6 mths starting to understand a little and know basic phrases. I also have 3 boys 5, 2 and 7 mths. The eldest in school so I meet the local parents and I am soon putting the middle one into nursery here and that will also help meet more new people with kids of a similar age. There are lots of baby sites for parents in lausanne so she will be able to easily find places to take the kids..if you search through the site there several thread with the weblinks for sites with playgroups, meets etc.
Summer will be a lovely time to come as the weather is lovely it was fantastic this year so great for the kids to play and places to see.
